The West African Examination Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is an examination that is administered by the West African Examination Council (WAEC). The examination is administered yearly. It is open to candidates from Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the Gambia.

The WAEC examination is open to both private and school candidates. So, this leads us to the question of the day, “which universities in the USA  accept WAEC result?”.

Universities in USA that Accept WASSCE Results

Importantly, note that most of these universities will only accept this result when you provide your score of English Proficiency with TOEFL or IELTS for admission.

That being said, below is the list of American universities that accept WASSCE, WAEC, GCE, and SSCE results from applicants from West Africa.

University of Houston

The University of Houston is one of the universities in the United States (US) that accepts WAEC results for admission. However, applicants must meet some other requirements like the English Language requirements.

The recommended English Language test is the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing Service).

Freshman applicants from Nigeria and Ghana must provide evidence of completion of high school by submitting the following:

  • Official Senior School Certificate Examination issued by the West African Examinations Council (must be sent directly from the board WAEC) or the purchase of a scratch card (please mail the actual card to the university).

Kansas State University

Kansas State University is a public research university with its main campus in Manhattan, Kansas, United States.

As an international student from West Africa, you must present your SAT test along with your WAEC result.

Dayton University

Dayton University also accepts WAEC results from Ghanaian and Nigerian students. However, international students also need to provide additional requirements for admission.

Wichita State University

Wichita State University accepts SSCE results (WAEC or NECO) from Ghanaian and Nigerian students.

Western Kentucky University

Western Kentucky University is one of the numerous universities in the United States that accepts SSCE results.

International students from Ghana and Nigeria are expected to provide external examination results for the Senior School Certificate (WAEC/WASSC) and valid Scratch
Card information.

Applicants must pass a minimum of 5 credits (A1 – C6) and have an overall average of 75% in academic subjects at the secondary level.

University of Arizona

The University of Arizona also accepts Senior School Certificate (WAEC./WASSC) certificate from Ghanaian and Nigerian students. Nigerian and Ghanaian students specifically are not expected to provide English Language Proficiency.

Applicants must pass a minimum of 5 credits (minimum grade C or B) and have an overall average of 75% in academic subjects at the secondary level.

University of California, San Diego

The University of California, San Diego is one of the Universities in the US that accepts WAEC result.

In addition to the WAEC Senior School Certificate, applicants are expected to write SAT.

  1. The fallacy is with us however I. Venture to say to US Schools are not totally fair to West African Students overall.
    The list of Schools that accept Gh Graduates is very low and I foresee a battle of wits and Degrees when it comes to Graduate Schools.

    The GRE and the LSAT have been overated.Gh Masters Degrees have some utility but that will depend on the GPA that the students have gained whilst in School.

    I actually Gh Students to first get Degrees within the nation because Foreign Schools are hard in accepting us.
