UEW POSTGRADUATE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
PHD PROGRAMMES
Applicant should possess Researched Master’s Degree in the relevant field of study from an accredited institution, with Cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 3.0 in the course work and at least grade “B” in the thesis/dissertation. The applicant will also be required to attend and pass admission selection interview conducted by the department.
Departmental/Programme specific requirements may apply. Ph.D. programmes are meant to last for a minimum of three (3) years (for full-time candidates) and four (4) years (for part-time candidates).
Ph.D. PROGRAMMES (International Applicants)
- Possess a researched-based Master’s degree not below a 3.0 GPA from any recognized university in related field of study.
- Demonstration of English competencies from an institution that conducted instruction in English or an equivalent of 100 and above TOEFL scores.
- Computer literacy demonstrated by ease of use of Microsoft applications, Google applications and at least one data analytic software (e.g. SPSS, NVIVO, MPlus, SAS, LISREL etc.
- Three (3) letters of recommendation, with at least one from a person who has been your research supervisor, and one from an instructor.
- Writing sample/portfolio
- Personal statement
- A satisfactory performance of 70% and above in a screening interview organized by the Department.
PH.D. IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP
The general entry requirements for all graduate programmes in the University of Education shall apply
Specific Departmental Requirements
- Applicants must possess an M.Phil. (by Research) in relevant area or a cognate field from any accredited institution.
- They must have obtained a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0 or higher in the Master’s degree.
- They must complete an application procedure that includes a statement of purpose and an understanding of research objective for terminal degree studies.
- They must pass a selection interview organized by the Department of Educational Administration and Management.
- Applicants will be expected to demonstrate potential for research through the writing of a research proposal.
- The general regulations governing entry requirements of University of Education, Winneba (UEW) (School of Graduate Studies) shall apply.
Note: Foreign degrees must be accompanied with its interpretation from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.
PH.D. IN MUSIC
Option I
Applicants must possess:
- A researched Master’s Degree (M.Phil. by Research) from University of Education, Winneba or any accredited university.
- Applicants must pass a selection interview.
Option II (For candidates by creative work and thesis)
A written explanation of the cohesive structure between their choice and the thesis that shall include:
- a portfolio of completed compositions/studio works/theatrical works (scores, paintings, videos, electronic files etc.)
- an outline of the proposed work/works and
- a research proposal.
Ph.D. IN ARTS AND CULTURE
Applicants must:
- Hold M.Phil. in Arts and Culture /M.Phil. in Music/M. Phil. in Fine Arts/M.Phil. in Theatre Arts/ M.Phil. in Visual Communication from University of Education, Winneba, or any accredited university.
- Pass a selection interview.
Ph.D. IN SCIENCE EDUCATION
Applicant must possess:
- M. Phil. in science Education from University of Education, Winneba or any recognised University.
- M. Phil. in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Integrated Science and Science related programmes from a recognized university.
- M.Sc. in related sciences with research (with an education component/ postgraduate diploma in education or its equivalent) from a recognized university.
- Must pass a selection interview.
Ph. D. IN COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA STUDIES
- A Researched Master’s degree (M.A./MSc./M. Phil.) in Communication or related fields of study from an accredited institution. OR
- A researched Master’s degree (M.A./MSc./M. Phil.) in other disciplines.
- A Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0 or better in the courses offered at the Master’s Degree level.
- At least grade ‘B’ in the dissertation/thesis presented at the Master’s degree.
- Candidates are required to pass an interview (to be determined by the selection committee) before being admitted.
- Satisfy additional requirement prescribed by the University, Faculty or Department.
Note: Applicants in category (a) above will constitute the stream one of the Ph.D. in Communication and Media Studies programme and applicants in category (b) above will constitute those in stream two.
TWO-YEAR M.PHIL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Candidate must possess a first degree with at least Second Lower Class Division in the relevant field of study from any recognised university.
NB: Departmental specific requirements may apply. M.Phil. programmes are run on regular (full time) mode for two (2) years, in which students must complete their theses.
M.PHIL. IN ECONOMICS
Applicants must:
- Possess a good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Economics or related programmes that are quantitatively based such as Mathematics and Engineering at the tertiary level of education from recognized universities.
- Pass a selection interview.
M.PHIL. IN ENGLISH
Applicant must:
- Possess a good first degree with a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division) is required from candidates who have obtained B.A. or B.Ed. (English).
- Candidates must provide supporting documents such as certificates, academic transcripts, project work/thesis and two (2) referees’ reports.
- Applicants must attend and pass a selection interview.
- Areas of specialization are: Language, Pedagogy and Literature.
M. PHIL. IN GHANAIAN LANGUAGE STUDIES
- To be admitted in to the M.Phil. in Ghanaian Language Studies degree programme, the candidate must have obtained a first degree (First Class or a Second Class Division) from the University of Education, Winneba or any recognized university.
- Note that the Ghanaian Language applicants choose to study at the M. Phil. level should be one which has been done at the first degree level.
- Applicants are to attend and pass the University’s selection interview.
M. PHIL. IN FRENCH
Applicants should possess:
A good Bachelor’s Degree with Education component (eg. B.Ed), from the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) or its equivalent from a recognized University in the relevant field of study, or
- A good Bachelor’s Degree without Education e.g. (B.A, BSc) from an accredited university
- M.Ed. or equivalent qualifications with relevant course content. Such applicant may be required to do the M Phil programme within one year.
M. PHIL. IN APPLIED LINGUISTICS
Applicants should:
- Provide evidence of a good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in language or linguistics and related discipline from any recognised University.
- Attend and pass a selection interview.
M. PHIL. IN TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
Applicants:
- Must possess a good first degree in any language with a Second Class Lower Division or better from any recognized university.
- Must be an English teacher in addition to (i) above.
- Must attend and pass a selection interview.
M.PHIL. IN EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT
Applicants must:
- possess a good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) from the University of Education, Winneba or other Universities recognized by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba or from any institution accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.
- possess a good honours (Second Class Lower Division or better) in disciplines other than education must obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or its equivalence before applying.
M.PHIL. IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Applicants must:
- possess a good first degree, (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Early Childhood Education, Basic Education, Special Education, Guidance and Counselling/Counselling Psychology from the University of Education, Winneba or a recognized university.
- be computer literate.
- NB: In addition to the above stated requirements, applicants should have qualification in Educational Studies (Diploma in Education or better).
- pass a selection interview.
M.PHIL. IN BASIC EDUCATION
Applicant must:
- possess a Bachelor’s degree (not below Second Class Lower Division) in Basic Education from University of Education, Winneba or recognized university.
- be a former University of Education product who in addition to their diploma in Basic Education have a good Bachelor’s degree (not below Second Class Lower division) in Humanities or the Sciences.
- possess a Bachelor’s degree (not below Second Class Lower Division) with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from a recognized university.
- Possess M. Ed. or equivalent qualifications with relevant course content.
- Possess a good Bachelor’s degree (not below Second Class Lower Division) in any field of study and a Diploma in Education.
- pass a selection interview.
M. PHIL. IN SPECIAL EDUCATION
Applicant must possess:
- Bachelor’s degree (not below Second Class Lower Division) in Special Education.
- A professional qualification approved by the academic Board as being equivalent to a good Bachelor’s degree. The professional qualification must be in Special Education, Community-Based Rehabilitation Studies etc. into which admission is sought.
- A good Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline/profession such as nursing etc. from a recognised public university.
- An academic transcript shall be required for the admission.
- Candidates must pass a selection interview.
M.PHIL. IN CHEMISTRY EDUCATION
Applicants should possess:
- A good first degree in Chemistry from the University of Education, Winneba.
- A good first degree in Chemistry (with and education component) from a recognized university.
- A good first degree in Chemistry from a recognized university and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or its equivalent.
- Former product of University of Education, Winneba with Diploma in Science Education in addition to BSc in Chemistry from recognized university are eligible to apply.
- Applicants must pass the selection interview.
M.PHIL. IN SCIENCE EDUCATION
Applicants should possess:
- A good first degree in the Sciences with an Education component from a recognised University.
- A good first degree in the Sciences from a recognised University and a postgraduate diploma in education or its equivalent.
- A good first degree in the Sciences from recognised universities and Diploma in Science Education from University of Education, Winneba.
M.PHIL. IN BIOLOGY EDUCATION
Applicants possessing the following qualifications may be admitted to the Master of Philosophy Biology Education:
- A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Biology Education from any recognised University.
- A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Biology (with an Education component) from a recognised University.
- A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Biology or related area such as Botany, Zoology or Environmental Science from a recognised University with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or its equivalent.
- Candidates are required to pass a selection interview.
M.PHIL. IN BIOLOGY
Applicants possessing the following qualifications may be admitted to the Master of Philosophy Biology Education:
- A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Biology Education from any recognised University.
- A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Biology (with or without an Education component) from a recognised University.
- A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Biology or related area such as Botany, Zoology or Environmental Science from a recognised University with or without a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or its equivalent.
- Candidates are required to pass a selection interview.
M.PHIL. IN FOOD AND NUTRITION
A candidate seeking admission into this programme shall be required to obtain:
- B. Ed. Home Economics degree (with a foundation in Food and Nutrition) or BSc. Home Economics Education (with a foundation in Food and Nutrition) from the University of Education, Winneba or an institution recognised by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba, with a grading not below Second Class Lower Division.
- Candidates with B. A. or BSc. Home Economics/Home Science/Family and Consumer Science with a foundation in Food and Nutrition and Catering and Hospitality from any other university recognised by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba should in addition to their Bachelor’s degree have a Diploma in Education or Postgraduate Diploma in Education.
- Candidates are required to pass an interview organised by the Department.
M.PHIL. IN FAMILY LIFE MANAGEMENT
A candidate seeking admission into this programme shall be required to obtain:
- B. Ed./BSc. Home Economics Education from the University of Education, Winneba or any institution recognised by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba, with a grading not below Second Class Lower Division.
- Candidates with B. A. or BSc. Home Economics/Home Science/Family and Consumer Science/Catering and Hospitality from any other university recognised by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba should in addition have a Diploma in Education or Postgraduate Diploma in Education.
- Candidates are required to pass an interview organised by the Department.
M.PHIL. IN CLOTHING AND TEXTILES
A candidate seeking admission into this programme should have obtained:
- A B.Ed. Home Economics (Clothing and Textiles) degree with a grading not below a Second Class Lower.
- A BSc. Degree in Home Economics Education from University of Education, Winneba with a grading not below Second Class Lower.
- BSc. Home Science, Family and Consumer Science (Clothing and Textiles) or an equivalent qualification from any other university recognised by the Academic Board of University of Education, Winneba with a grading not below Second Class Lower.
- B.Tech. Fashion and Textiles with grade B or CGPA of 3.0 or better.
- Candidates with M.Ed. in Home Economics (Clothing and Textiles) M.Tech. Fashion Design and Textiles should have grade B or CGPA of 3.0 or better.
- Candidates are required to pass an interview organised by the Department.
M. PHIL. IN HUMAN RIGHTS, PEACE AND CONFLICT STUDIES
The entry requirements for the M.Phil. in Human Rights, Peace and Conflict Studies is:
- A Graduate with a good first degree in any social science discipline from a recognised institution.
- Persons who hold relevant professional qualifications equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree.
- Members of recognised professional institutions like the Police Service, Prisons Service, Ghana Education Service, Immigration Service, Ports and Harbours, Armed Forces, Health Services and the District, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies who have a Bachelor’s degree.
- Candidates meeting the requirements stipulated in regulations (1) to (3) must also meet other conditions or requirements as may be prescribed by the Graduate Board.
- Notwithstanding regulations (1) to (3) above, a candidate may be required as a condition for admission to attend and pass an interview conducted by the Centre for Conflict, Human Rights, and Peace Studies.
- Submit a detailed proposal of intended research.
NB: Session: 4 Sessions Duration: 2-years
M.PHIL. IN GEOGRAPHY EDUCATION
Applicants should:
- Possess Second class lower or better in Geography or any related discipline.
- Pass the selection interview.
M. PHIL. IN ARTS AND CULTURE
Applicants must:
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree (not less than Second Class Lower Division) in Arts and Culture/Music/Theatre Arts/Visual Communication from University of Education, Winneba, or any accredited university.
- Applicants who hold M. A. in the disciplines in ‘A’ above may be considered for a one (1) year Top-Up.
- Pass a selection interview
M. PHIL. IN THEATRE ARTS
Applicants possessing the following qualifications may be admitted into the M. Phil. Theatre Arts programme:
- A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Theatre Arts from any recognized university.
- A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in any related programme in the Performing Arts.
MFA IN THEATRE ARTS
Applicants possessing the following qualifications may be admitted into the M FA in Theatre Arts programme:
- A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Theatre Arts from any recognized university.
- A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in any related programme in the Performing Arts.
- Applicants should attend and pass an interview organised by the Department in addition to (i) and (ii) above.
M. A. IN THEATRE ARTS
Applicants possessing the following qualifications may be admitted into the M FA in Theatre Arts programme:
- A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Theatre Arts from any recognized university.
- A good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in any related programme in the Performing Arts.
- Applicants should attend and pass an interview organised by the Department in addition to (i) and (ii) above.
M. PHIL. IN ART EDUCATION
Applicants should possess:
- A good first degree in relevant discipline (Studio Art, Art Education, Design, or Art History) from recognized tertiary institution
- A minimum of Second Class Lower Division (at the Bachelor’s level)
- Applicants who hold M. A. in the disciplines in ‘A’ above (with a minimum average of “B”) may be considered for a one (1) year Top-Up.
- Applicants must pass a selection interview.
M.PHIL. IN TEXTILES AND FASHION EDUCATION
- Applicants must hold a good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in a relevant field.
- In addition, candidates must submit an acceptable research proposal/creative work (s) for which supervision is available.
- Application must be accompanied by written research proposal and or a portfolio of completed studio works (non-electronic and or electronic portfolio such as videos, still images etc.)
- Applicants must demonstrate competence or potential in analytical skills in the various literatures in the textiles and fashion including theory and practice, bibliography and techniques.
- Applicants who hold M.A or M.Tech in the field may be considered for a 1-year Top-Up for the M.Phil. Degree.
- All applicants must pass a selection interview.
M.PHIL. IN VISUAL COMMUNICATION STUDIES
- Applicants must possess a good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in a relevant discipline from a recognised tertiary institution.
- All candidates are required to submit an online portfolio of work to be assessed by the programmes’ staff team.
- Minimum average of a ‘B’ in M.A. Communication Design/M.A. Visual Communication/ M.A. Art Education/ M.A. Arts and Culture/ M.A. Media and Communication/ M.A. Graphic Design or its equivalent.
M.PHIL. IN DEVELOPMENT FINANCE
- Applicants must have a good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in any academic discipline from a recognized institution.
- Foreign applicants with academic qualifications equivalent to and certified by the Ghana Tertiary Commission may apply for admission.
- Applicants with MBA/MSc. degree in any related field may apply.
- All applicants must pass a competitive selection interview to be considered for admission.
M.PHIL. IN INFROMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
- A good Bachelor’s degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Information Technology Education, Information and Communication Technology Education or Computer Science Education or a related discipline from a recognised university.
OR
- A good Bachelor’s degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Information Technology, Information and Communication Technology or Computer Science. Such applicants upon admission shall audit a number of foundation courses in education and instructional technology.
- Applicants with M. Ed. in ICT could be enrolled to do a one-year top-up programme to get the M. Phil.
- Applicants with one year MSc. in ICT/Computer Science may enrol into this programme.
- Applicants must also submit a proposal (500-600 words, double-spaced) that addresses the applicant’s career goals, teaching experience, teaching philosophy, prior experience using ICT, and views on the role of ICT in enhancing education and training.
M.PHIL. IN FINANCE
Qualified applicants are:
- Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in any Business and Science programme.
- Applicants who possess a good first degree (at least a Second Class Lower Division) or its equivalent in any field of study from a recognised University.
- Applicants with MBA/MSc. in Finance or related fields.
- Applicants must pass a selection interview.
OR
- Be a member of a recognised professional body such as ACCA, ICAG, CIMA, CFA, CIB, CDFA and ICSA.
- Have at least three years post qualification experience.
- Pass a selection interview.
M.PHIL. IN ACCOUNTING
This programme is intended for prospective applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in any Business and Science programme.
- Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Accounting related programme with at least Second Class Honours, or its equivalent from a recognised University.
- Applicants with MBA degree in Accounting or related field.
- Applicants must pass a selection interview.
OR
- Applicants must be a member of a recognised professional body such as Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA), Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), Chartered Institute of Taxation Ghana (CITG) and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).
- Must have at least three years of postqualification experience.
- Must pass a selection interview.
M.PHIL. IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT OPTION
Applicants must:
- Have a good first degree (at least a Second Class Division) in any academic discipline from a recognised institution.
- Applicants with MBA/MSc. in Human Resource Management or related field.
- Pass a competitive selection interview to be considered for admission.
MBA ACCOUNTING OPTION
Applicants must meet any of the following entry requirements:
- Hold a Second Class Honours degree, or its equivalent, in Finance, Accounting, Economics, and other business related subjects. Applications may also be considered from graduates in non-business areas with strong quantitative background.
- Be a professionally qualified accountant and a member of one of the Accountancy bodies constituting the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).
- Have at least one year’s relevant experience in the private or public sector
- Pass a selection interview.
MBA HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT OPTION
Applicants must meet any of the following entry requirements:
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree with at least a Second Class Lower Division in any field of study from a recognised institution.
- Applicants with Third Class Division will be required to write an entrance examination after which they will go through an interview process for admission.
- Candidates with full membership in a recognized professional bodies e.g. IHRMP, SHRM, CIPD, ACCA, ICA (G) CIMA and ICSA will be an added advantage.
- Candidates must pass a competitive selection interview to be considered for admission.
MBA MARKETING OPTION
Applicants must meet any of the following entry requirements:
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree with at least a Second Class Lower Division in any academic discipline from a recognised institution.
- Applicants with recognised professional qualifications such as CIM, ACCA, CIPS with a minimum of two(2) years post-qualification working experience may apply for admission.
- Applicants with Third Class Division may be considered for admission on grounds of substantial working/professional experience.
- Foreign students with academic and professional qualifications equivalent to and certified by the National Accreditation Board may apply for admission.
- Applicants must pass a competitive selection interview to be considered for admission.
MBA MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (MIS)
Category A
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree with at least a Second Class Division from a recognised university preferably in an Information Technology (IT) related field.
Category B
- Candidates with Third Class Honours will be required to write an entrance examination after which they will go through an interview process for admission.
- Selection will be done through an interview process.
MBA FINANCE OPTION
Applicants must meet any of the following entry requirements:
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree with at least a 2nd Class Lower Division in any academic discipline from a recognised institution.
- Applicants with recognised professional qualifications such as CIM, ACCA, CIPS with a minimum of two(2) years post-qualification working experience may apply for admission.
- Applicants with Third Class Division may be considered for admission on grounds of substantial working/professional experience.
- Foreign students with academic and professional qualifications equivalent to and certified by the National Accreditation Board may apply for admission.
- Applicants must pass a competitive selection interview to be considered for admission.
M.PHIL. IN PROCUREMENT AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT
- Applicants must have a good first degree in any discipline from an accredited academic institution
- Foreign applicants with academic and professional qualifications that meet the National Accreditation Board’s admission requirements for postgraduate studies may be considered for admission
- In addition to the academic and professional qualifications, students will be required to attend virtual or face-to-face interviews.
M.PHIL. IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATIONS MANAGEMENT
- Applicants must have a good first degree in any discipline from an accredited academic institution
- Foreign applicants with academic and professional qualifications that meet the National Accreditation Board’s admission requirements for postgraduate studies may be considered for admission
- In addition to the academic and professional qualifications, students will be required to attend virtual or face-to-face interviews.
M.PHIL. IN MUSIC
Applicants must:
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree (not less than Second Class Lower Division) in Music from University of Education, Winneba, or any accredited tertiary institution.
- Pass a selection interview
M. A. / M.PHIL. IN JOURNALISM AND MEDIA STUDIES
- Applicants into the M.A in Journalism and Media Studies must have Bachelor’s Degree from any discipline, and should have obtained a class not lower than Second Class Lower division.
- Should pass a selection interview.
- Applicants who obtain a GPA of 3.0 or better at the M.A coursework and are desirous of pursuing the M.Phil. Journalism and Media Studies programme are given the opportunity to apply internally for consideration and transition.
M. A. /M.PHIL. IN STRATEGIC COMMUNICATION
- Applicants into the M.A in Strategic Communication must have Bachelor’s Degree from any discipline, and should have obtained a class not lower than Second Class Lower division.
- Should pass a selection interview.
- Applicants who obtain a GPA of 3.0 or better at the M.A coursework and are desirous of pursuing the M.Phil. Strategic Communication programme are given the opportunity to apply internally for consideration and transition.
M. A. /M.PHIL. IN DEVELOPMENT COMMUNICATION
- Applicants into the M.A in Development Communication must have Bachelor’s Degree from any discipline, and should have obtained a class not lower than Second Class Lower division.
- Should pass a selection interview.
- Applicants who obtain a GPA of 3.0 or better at the M.A coursework and are desirous of pursuing the M.Phil. Development Communication programme are given the opportunity to apply internally for consideration and transition.
M. A. /M.PHIL. IN COMMUNICATION INSTRUCTION
- Applicants into the M.A in Communication Instruction must have Bachelor’s Degree from any discipline, and should have obtained a class not lower than Second Class Lower division.
- Should pass a selection interview.
- Applicants with preference for programmes in the Department of Communication Instruction must have a background in language study; preferably, the English language programme at the bachelor’s level.
- Applicants who obtain a GPA of 3.0 or better at the M.A coursework and are desirous of pursuing the M.Phil. Communication Instruction programme are given the opportunity to apply internally for consideration and transition.
M.PHIL. IN POLITICAL SCIENCE EDUCATION
To be admitted to the Postgraduate programme in M. Phil. Political Science Education, candidates must possess a good first degree in Political Science major or B. A. Social Sciences with Political Science option or B. A. Development Studies with Political Science option.
- Candidates applying for the programme should have Political Science major (First Degree) or combined Political Science with another subject and must have attained at least a Second-Class Lower Division.
- Candidates with M.Ed. Political Science from a recognized University can also apply. Such a candidate may be required to take other courses in addition to completing a full research thesis within one (1) year.
- Applicants will have to pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department.
M. PHIL. IN HISTORY EDUCATION
To be admitted to the postgraduate programme in History Education, candidates must possess a good first degree in History or B. A. Social Sciences with History option.
- Candidates applying for the programme should have History Major (First degree) or combined History with another subject, and must have attained at least a Second Class Lower Division.
- Candidates with M. Ed. History from a recognised University may also apply. Such a candidate may be required to take additional courses in addition to completing a full research thesis within one year.
- Applicants will have to pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department.
M.PHIL. IN SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION
The following are eligible to apply for admission as candidates for the Master of Philosophy programme in Social Studies Education:
- A good Bachelor’s degree (Second Class Lower or better) in Social Studies or relevant field of study (Geography, Economics, History, Political Science, Development Studies, etc) from a recognized university.
- A person who holds a relevant professional qualification approved by the Academic Board.
- Notwithstanding regulations (a) and (b) above, a candidate may be required as a condition for admission to undergo such tests as may be prescribed by the Department with his proposed work or take such other pre-requisite or concurrent studies and examinations as may be prescribed, subject to overall control of the Board.
- Applicants must pass a selection interview before they will be admitted.
M. PHIL. IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORTS STUDIES
- A good Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education/Sports Coaching/Hospitality & Tourism Management (e.g. B.Ed., BSc.) from the University of Education/University of Cape Coast or its equivalent from a recognised university in a relevant field to Physical Education/Sports Education/Recreation & Leisure Management.
- Only applicants with M.Ed. or equivalent qualification in Physical Education/Sports Education may be required to complete the M. Phil. Programme within two (2) semesters.
- Applicants must pass an interview.
M. PHIL. IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION
Category 1: First Degree Holders
First degree holders must:
- Have a good Bachelor’s degree not below Second Class Lower Division in Mathematics Education or Mathematics.
- Have a professional qualification approved by the Academic Board as being equivalent to a good Bachelor’s degree in the discipline.
- Provide an academic transcript.
- Pass a selection interview.
Category 2: Master of Education (M. Ed.) candidates
For M. Ed. degree holders must:
- Possess M. Ed. degree in Mathematics Education
- Provide an academic transcript.
- Pass a selection interview.
M. PHIL. IN CURRICULUM AND PEDAGOGIC STUDIES
The following are eligible to apply for admission as candidates for the Master of Philosophy(Curriculum and Pedagogic Studies) programme:
- Graduates with a Bachelor’s degree in Education not below Second Class Lower division, from an accredited institution.
- Graduates with good first degree in disciplines outside Education, plus a Post-graduate Diploma in Education from an accredited institution.
- Notwithstanding regulations (1), (2), above, a candidate may be required as a condition for admission to undergo such assessments or take such other pre-requisite or concurrent studies and examinations as may be prescribed by the Department, subject to overall approval of the Graduate Board.
- Candidates must pass a selection interview.
1-YEAR TOP-UP TO M.PHIL PROGRAMMES
Candidate must possess a Master of Education/Master of Arts/Master of Science, with GPA not less than 3.0, in the relevant field of study from any university recognized by GTEC.
The applicant will also be required to attend and pass admission selection interview conducted by the Department.
NB: Departmental/Programme specific requirements may apply. These programmes are run on regular (full time) mode for one (1) year, in which students must complete their theses.
MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY (TOP-UP) IN:
- JOURNALISM AND MEDIA STUDIES

The M.Phil. in Journalism and Media Studies, Strategic Communication, Development Communication and Communication Instruction in 1-4 above are one (1) year Top-Up programmes for applicants with Master’s Degree in Communication and have a GPA of 3.0 or better.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED.TO M.PHIL. IN EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT
- Applicants must:
- Possess an M. Ed. (Educational Administration and Management) degree with G.P.A. of NOT LESS THAN 3.0 from University of Education, Winneba or any other University recognised by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba; or from any institution accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.
- pass the selection interview.
- Note: Foreign degrees must be accompanied with its interpretation from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED.TO M.PHIL. IN SPECIAL EDUCATION
Applicants must:
- Possess an M. Ed./M. A./MSc. in Special Education with a G.P.A. of not less than 3.0.
- Pass a selection interview.
- An academic transcript shall be required for admission.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED.TO M.PHIL IN COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGY
Applicants must possess:
- M.Ed./MA./M.Sc. in Psychology, Counselling, Social work, Sociology, Nursing and Pastoral Counselling or Theology from a recognised accredited institution
- CGPA of 2.5 or better.
- Must also pass the selection interview.
a. Foreign applicants must have qualification equivalent to bullet “a” and must be able to read and write in English. Certificates of prospective applicants will be verified and authenticated by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.
b. The 1-year programme will be run on weekends (January to December).
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A. TO M.PHIL IN GHANAIAN LANGUAGE STUDIES
- To be admitted for the One-year (Top-Up) M.Phil. in Ghanaian Language Studies degree programmes, the candidate must hold an M. A. degree from the University of Education, Winneba or any recognized university in which the Ghanaian Language chosen for the Top-Up M.Phil. programme, has been studied for the M. A. degree.
- The candidate must have obtained a minimum grade point of 3.0 in the requisite certificate for the application.
- The candidate will have to pass the University’s selection interview.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A./M.ED. TO M.PHIL IN FRENCH
1. Applicants must possess:
- a minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in French from the University of Education, Winneba or other recognised university.
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. in French.
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. French Education Programme.
2. Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A./M.ED. TO M.PHIL. IN TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (TESL)
1. Applicants must possess:
- a minimum degree of Second Class Lower Division in TESL or English from the University of Education, Winneba or other recognised university.
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. in TESL or English.
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. TESL Programme.
2. Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A./M.ED. TO M.PHIL. IN ENGLISH EDUCATION
- Applicants must possess:
- a minimum degree of Second Class Lower Division in English from the University of Education, Winneba or other recognised university.
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. in English.
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. English Education Programme.
- Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED.TO M.PHIL IN SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION
- Applicants must possess:
- a minimum degree of Second Class Lower Division in Social Studies from the University of Education, Winneba or other recognised university.
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.Ed. in Social Studies.
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.Ed. Social Studies Programme.
- Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A. TO M.PHIL. IN CONFLICTS, HUMAN RIGHTS AND PEACE STUDIES
- Applicants must possess:
- G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A. (Master of Arts) from the University of Education, Winneba or other recognized universities.
- a minimum degree of Second Class Lower Division in Master of Arts from University of Education, Winneba or other recognized Universities.
- Applicants will be required to submit detailed proposal of their intended research, which will be presented with the second year regular M.Phil. (Human Rights) Students.
- Applicant(s) must also pass the selection interview.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED. TO M.PHIL IN GEOGRAPHY EDUCATION
- Applicants must possess C.G.P.A. of not less than 2.5 from M.Ed (Geography) programme from University of Education, Winneba and other recognized universities.
- pass a selection interview at the Departmental level.
- Applicants will be required to submit a detailed proposal of their intended research, which will be presented with the second year regular M.Phil. (Geography with Education) students.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED.TO M.PHIL. IN COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGY
- Applicants must possess:
- M.Ed./MA./M.Sc. with GPA of at least 3.0 from any recognized university or accredited institution in Counselling Psychology or related field (Psychology, Guidance and Counselling, Social work, Nursing and Psychiatry).
- Must also pass the selection interview.
- Foreign applicants must have qualification equivalent to bullet “a” and must be able to read and write in English. Certificates of prospective applicants will be verified and authenticated by the National Accreditation Board (NAB).
- Applicants will be required to submit a detailed proposal of their intended research.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED.TO M.PHIL. IN SCIENCE EDUCATION
- Applicants must possess C.G.P.A. of not less than 2.5 from M.Ed. (Science Education or other related areas from University of Education, Winneba and other recognized universities.
- Pass a selection interview at the Departmental level.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED.TO M.PHIL. IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION
The candidate must:
- possess Master of Education (M. Ed.) in Mathematics

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED./M.A./M.TECH. TO M.PHIL. IN FOOD AND NUTRITION
- Applicants who possess M. A. or M. Ed. or M. Tech. ( with 12 calendar months/two sandwich sessions of programme) in Home Economics/Home Science/Catering and related areas can be admitted to pursue M. Phil. in Home Economics (Food and Nutrition).
- Such candidates in (i) may be required to complete the programme in twelve (12) calendar months.
- Applicants must pass a selection interview to be organised by the Department.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED./M.A./M.TECH. TO M.PHIL. IN FAMILY LIFE MANAGEMENT EDUCATION
- Applicants who possess M. A. or M. Ed. or M. Tech. ( with 12 calendar months/two sandwich sessions of programme) in Home Economics/Home Science can be admitted to pursue M. Phil. in Home Economics (Family Life Management Education).
- Such candidates in (i) may be required to complete the programme in twelve (12) calendar months.
- Applicants must pass a selection interview to be organised by the Department.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED./M.A./M.TECH. TO M.PHIL. IN CLOTHING AND TEXTILES
- Candidates with M. Ed. in Home Economics (Clothing and Textiles), M. Tech. Fashion Design and Textiles should have grade B or CGPA of 3.0 or better.
- A candidate with 12 calendar months/two sandwich sessions of M. A. or M.Ed. or M. Tech. programme in Home Economics/Home Science (Clothing and Textiles /Fashion option) and related areas can be admitted to pursue the M. Phil. Home Economics (Clothing and Textiles). Such candidates in (i) may be required to complete the programme in twelve (12) calendar months.
- Applicants must pass a selection interview to be organised by the Department.
1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A/ M.ED.TO M.PHIL. IN POLITICAL SCIENCE
- Candidates must possess a good first degree in Political Science or in a related Discipline.
- Candidates should attain 2nd Class lower Division or better.
- Candidates with M.A. or M. Ed in Political Science or related areas from recognised university can also apply.

Applicants must:
- Possess M. A. in Music from the University of Education.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M. A. TO M. PHIL. IN ARTS AND CULTURE
Applicants must:
- Possess M. A. in Arts and Culture/Music/Theatre Arts/Visual/Visual Communication from the University of Education, Winneba, or any accredited university.
- Pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department.
EXECUTIVE MASTERS IN HUMAN RIGHTS, CONFLICT AND PEACE STUDIES (WEEKEND PROGRAMME)
Applicants must:
- Possess a good first degree in any discipline from a recognized institution
- Be a Member of recognized Professional Institution, like the Police Service, Prisons Service, Ghana Education Service, Immigration Service, Ports and Harbour, Armed Forces, Health Services and the District, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies who have Senior High School (SHS), Ordinary or Advanced Level Certificate with five or more years working experience.
- Pass an interview.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR DISTANCE PROGRAMMES
- Possess a good first degree (at least 2nd Class Lower Division) from the University of Education, Winneba or other Universities recognised by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba or from any institution accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission of Ghana.
- Applicants with a good second honours (second class lower or better) degree in other disciplines other than Education are required to obtain a Diploma in Education or its equivalence before applying.
- Applicants with 3rd class or Pass in their respective first degrees would be required to pass an interview.
M. ED. IN MENTORSHIP
This programme is run in the distance learning mode.
Applicant must:
- be a teacher mentor trained by University Education, Winneba in the past.
- hold a first degree with education component (e.g. B. Ed) from a recognized University in the subject specific area and should have taught for at least two years.
- possess a first degree in a subject specific area plus postgraduate diploma/certificate in education.
- be a teacher in basic school at the level of principal superintendent and above in the Ghana Education Service status ranking.
- be recommended by his/her head of school.
