Universities in UK that Accept WASSCE Results

Importantly, note that most of these universities will only accept this result when you provide your score of English Proficiency with TOEFL or IELTS for admission.

That being said, below is the list of UK universities that accept WASSCE, WAEC, GCE, and SSCE results from applicants from West Africa.

University of Sheffield

All applicants are required to have an internationally recognized English language qualification, such as IELTS or equivalent. SSCE (WAEC) English C6 or above is usually accepted in place of IELTS or equivalent, however, this is at the discretion of each individual department.

The University of Manchester

Due to differences in education systems in Nigeria, Ghana, and the UK, candidates who have completed the SSCE must successfully complete a university-recognized foundation program before joining an undergraduate program.

Students who earn five high marks on the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) Level B2, including all Science, Mathematics, and English subjects, will be considered for University’s Science and Engineering with an integrated foundation year programme. Applications for University Biosciences with a foundation year program will be considered upon completion of the SSCE, case by case.

University of Birmingham

English language at grade C or above (or in numerical terms, grade 6 or above) in the WAEC SSCE is sufficient to meet the standard English language requirements.

University of Portsmouth

The University of Portsmouth accepts a Grade C6 or above in English on the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), IELTS, IGCSE and several other certificates, but don’t worry if you’re currently short of the standard required – we offer English Language Programmes that will get you to the necessary level.

Candidates must first of all undergo a foundation programme before being offered admission.

West African Examination Certificate, achieving at least five subjects with an average of C6 or above. For Economics, Finance or Management degrees a B3 in Maths is required.

Brunel University London

In general, our courses ask for an English level of between IELTS 6.0 and 7.0 or equivalent. Some courses will have higher requirements (and will require you to also reach minimum sub-scores).

The West African Senior School Certificate (WASSC) is not currently accepted for entry to any of our bachelor degree programmes.
