  1. MSc./MPHIL/PHD CROP SCIENCE

Programme Objectives:

The Department of Horticulture and Crop Production currently runs three (3) postgraduate programmes (i.e. MSc./MPhil and PhD in Crop Science) with specializations in four (4) areas:  Agronomy, Entomology, Pathology and Postharvest Technology.

Objectives of the MSc./ MPhil Programmes

The MSc./MPhil in Crop Science programmesare designed for students wishing to further enhance their career prospects in research and consultancy in crop science. Each programme will meet its overall goal to educate its graduates professionally and ethically to be valuable technocrats and professionals in Ghana and abroad, with the following objectives:

  • To providea deeper understanding of the current status and future trends in crop science related to food security, crop production, crop protection, pest management, disease control, biotechnology and issues concerning global food security.
  • To train to identify and respond to complex crop science problems involving technical, environmental, and socioeconomic sustainability.
  • To inculcate in students, the ability to apply advanced systems analysis tools in a multi-disciplinary setting in order toidentify agricultural problems, plan, analyze, design and implement scientific solutions to agricultural and entomological problems in Ghana and beyond.
  • To train students to provide consultancy services to government agencies, private companies, and private individuals in the field of crop science.
  • To institute and advance the application of smart agricultural tools and techniques to integrate sustainable agricultural and entomological practices.
  • To understand and appreciate the complex nexus among knowledge in sustainable production, quality of food, feed for animals, postharvest quality control, postharvest handling, postharvest engineering, packaging system for fresh produce, in other to ameliorate plants as a key element in our consented effort to feed the world’s growing population.

Objectives of the PhD Crop Science programme

The Doctor of Philosophy in Crop Science programme has been designed for post graduates wishing to enhance their career prospects in crop science to adequately prepare them to occupy faculty and research positions. The programme aims to provide advanced training for Agronomists, Entomologists, Pathologists and Postharvest technologists concerned with sustainably managing agricultural, entomological and food security resources and processes at the PhD level.

Target Audience:

The MSc./MPhil and PhD in Crop Science programmes are open to all applicants having the requisite technical background knowledge: First or second degree holders of agricultural science, biological science, and professionals with industry experience interested in pursuing masters and PhD degrees in Crop Science.

Duration:

  1. /MPhil programmes: Minimum of 2 years and maximum of 4 years.
  2. PhD programme: Minimum of 4 years and maximum of 6 years.

Available Session:

We currently run only weekend programmes.

Entry Requirements:

MSc./MPhil programmes: Eligible candidates for admission should normally be holders of a BSc. degree in Agriculture and/or Biological Science of this University or any other University recognised by Academic Board with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division or its equivalent in relevant disciplines. Applicants will be shortlisted and interviewed for admission.

PhD programme: Eligible candidates for admission should normally be holders of MPhil degree in Agriculture and/or Biological Science equivalence in relevant disciplines from this University or any other University recognised by Academic Board. Applicants will be shortlisted and interviewed for admission.

Funding Opportunities: 

Students can apply for the GNPC Scholarship or apply to the Association of African Universities (AAU) headquartered in Accra, Ghana, for funding support. There is also limited funding for Entomology candidates interested in working on entomophagy (Edible insects).

  1. MBA/MPHIL AGRIBUSINESS MANAGEMENT

Programme Objectives:

The MPhil Agribusiness Management programme has been designed for students wishing to enhance their careers in research and consultancy. The programme will train future agribusiness professionals who will be able to contribute significantly to agribusiness and agro-industrial developments in developed, emerging and developing economies.The programme will train graduatesto:

  • Acquire knowledge and technical skills in the areas of agribusiness management.
  • Provide consultancy services to government agencies, private companies, and private individuals in the field of Agribusiness, and rural development in general.
  • Conduct demand-driven research and disseminate appropriate technologies to farm managers, companies/industries and relevant policy-making agencies of governments.
  • Make use of the problem-solving skills acquired to create a policy environment to sustain the agribusiness systems spanning from production to consumption.

The MBA Agribusiness programmehas been designed to train students to undertake managerial-level careers in food production, processing, agricultural output and input marketing, agricultural finance, supply chain, foodand alliedsectors.

The specific objectives of the programme are to train graduates to:

  • Train the next generation of agripreneurs who will establish agribusinesses and create job opportunities in commodity value chains in Ghana, Africa and the world.
  • Possess skills that meet the nation’s demand for high level professional manpower in Agribusinesses.
  • Apply the acquired knowledge and practical skills to up-scale agribusiness management, farmer based organizations, agribusiness supply chain management and improve marketing of processed agricultural commodities as well as creating jobs in agribusiness enterprises.
  • Facilitate processes in small, medium and large-scale enterprises in the globally competitive agricultural based industry.
  • Foster a more effective functioning and performance of input suppliers, producers, wholesalers, processors, exporters, retailers, financial institutions, tractor service operators, aggregators and all supporting institutions within food supply chains.

Target Audience:

The MPhil/MBA Agribusiness Management programme is open to all applicants having the requisite technical background knowledge: First-degree holders of agribusiness, agriculture, natural resource management, economics, accounting and commerce, business administration, enterprise resource management, development studies, environmental studies and professionals with industry experience in banks and finance institutions, agriculture, forestry and agribusiness related jobs, NGOs, community development etc.

  1. MBA: Two (2) years made up of four academic semesters
  2. MPhil: Two (2) years made up of four academic semesters

Objectives of the MSc. Programme

  • To provide a deeper understanding of the current status and future trends in sustainable energy development and social corporate responsibility with the purpose of alerting students about energy sustainability concerns on global, regional and local levels.
  • To identify and respond to complex energy systems problems involving technical, environmental and socioeconomic components.
  • To apply advanced systems analysis tools in a multi-disciplinary setting in order to plan, analyze, design and implement solutions to energy systems problems.
  • To develop application of energy tools and techniques to integrate sustainable practices (economical, environmental and social concerns).
  • To provide understanding of the complex interactions between energy system solutions and their implications on larger scale (regional, national, global) technological, economic, societal and energy systems with a view on long-term sustainability.

Objectives of PhD Programme

The Doctor of Philosophy in Sustainable Energy Management programme has been designed for post graduates wishing to enhance their career prospects in sustainable energy management to occupy faculty and research positions. The programme aims to provide advanced training for both engineers and scientists concerned with sustainably managing energy resources and processes at the PhD level.

Target Audience:

The Sustainable Energy Management (SEMA) programme is open to all applicants having the requisite technical background knowledge: First degree holders of renewable energy technologies, electrical, mechanical, agricultural and energy engineering’s, sciences, and professionals with industry experience interested in pursuing masters and PhD degrees in sustainable energy management.

Duration:

  1. MSC: Minimum 2 years and Maximum 3 years for weekdays;

Minimum 3 years and Maximum 5 years for weekends

  1. PHD: Minimum 3 years and Maximum 5 years for weekdays;

Minimum 4 years and Maximum 6 years for weekends

Entry Requirements:

  • Masters Programme: To be eligible for admission into the Masters Research Degree programme, candidates must be graduates of this University or any other University recognised by the Academic Board and shall normally have obtained a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division) degree in the relevant field (e.g. renewable energy engineering, electrical engineering, agricultural engineering, mechanical engineering etc). Excellent candidates may be admitted into research masters programme in the first instance and later upgraded into the PhD prograame after sucessful completion of the course work and upon recommendations from the Department and School Boards. The applicant must complete National Service prior to the commencement of the academic year he/she is seeking to enroll into the programme. All applicants must undergo a selection interview.
  • Doctoral Programme: To be eligible for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy degree programme, a student must have obtained a Master’s degree from this University or its equivalent from any other University recognised by the Academic Board, with a strong potential to conduct independent research. Exceptional Second year M.Phil/MSc students may be upgraded into the Ph.D programme upon recommendation from the Department and School Boards. In exceptional cases non-research Masters degree holders may be admitted into the Ph.D programme after successful completion of further 6-12 months supervised postgraduate training programme.

  1. MSC/PHD ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT

Programme Objectives:      

The programme seeks to provide advanced training for both engineers and scientists concerned with protecting the environment and human health through the provision of services such as water supply, wastewater treatment and municipal solid waste and hazardous waste management.

Target Audience:

Academia, consultants, scientists and engineers working in the water, sanitation, environmental or civil engineering sectors.

Duration:

  1. MSC: Minimum 2 years and Maximum 3 years for weekdays

Minimum 3 years and Maximum 5 years for weekends

  1. PHD: Minimum 3 years and Maximum 5 years for weekdays

Masters Programme: To be eligible for admission into the Masters Research Degree programme, candidate must be a graduate of this University or any other University recognised by the Academic Board and shall normally have obtained a minimum of Second Class (Upper Division) degree in the relevant field (e.g. Environmental Sciences, Water Supply and Sanitation Engineering or Civil engineering).
  2. Doctoral Programme: To be eligible for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy degree programme, a student must have obtained a Master’s degree from this University or its equivalent from any other University recognised by the Academic Board, with a strong potential to conduct independent research (i.e. proof of publication record since the graduation from the MSc. Programme is crucial).

To be eligible for admission into the MSc. Computer Science Programme, applicants must possess a BSc. degree or its equivalent in Computer Sciences, or any related discipline from an accredited University with a minimum of Second-Class Lower Division. To be eligible for admission into the PhD Computer Science Programme, applicants must possess an MPhil in Computer Science or its equivalent from an accredited University. Applicants must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity for independent work, maturity, effective decision making and problem-solving potentials. Applicants with qualifications from Science and Engineering backgrounds with a strong Computing and Mathematical background may be considered. Candidates from other disciplines will have to take up most of the MPhil Computer Science course to prepare them for the PhD Programme.

Programme Objectives:      

  1. To churn out quality graduates with sound knowledge in environmental policy and development theory.
  2. To produce quality graduates with in-depth knowledge and skills in environmental and development planning methodologies and tools for application to the development of societies.
  3. To produce quality graduates capable of conducting interdisciplinary research geared towards finding solutions to societies’ developmental challenges.

Target Audience:

The programme targets first degree holders of environmental planning, development and spatial planning, development studies, environmental studies, geography, economics, natural resources management and related fields who are interested in pursuing MPhil/MSc. degree in Environmental Planning and Development.

  1. MPHIL / MSC CLIMATE CHANGE

Programme Objectives:      

The general objective of the MPhil / MSc. Climate Change programme is to provide advanced training in climate change, its etiology, its components, implications for man-environment relationships, and how policy can address this challenge for national development. The specific objectives of the programme are:

  1. To equip students to appreciate the complex nature of the policies relating to climate change and its ramifications.
  2. To train students in the use of advanced research techniques to investigate climate change related problems and how to effectively communicate the knowledge acquired.
  3. To equip students to critically examine the complex interactions in the climatic system and its implications on larger scale (regional, national, global) technological, economic, societal and geophysical systems with a view on long-term sustainability.
  4. To equip students with skills needed to identify, analyze and understand the complex climate change related problems and their interrelationships with natural resources and the ecosystems.

Intended Outcomes of the Programme:

On completion of the MPhil/MSc. Climate Change programme it is expected that:

  1. Graduates will understand the nexus between anthropogenic activity, global warming, climatic variability, adaptation and mitigation of climate change for continuous human development.
  2. Graduates will be able to independently carry out rigorous research in climate change and allied fields using advanced tools and scientific research methods.
  3. Graduates will meaningfully communicate climate change research findings to an appropriate target audience through research paper publication, reports, technical briefs, policy briefs and presentations.
  4. A crop of well-trained graduates will be available to augment the Government of Ghana and stakeholder efforts at addressing the challenges posed by climate change at the local, regional and national levels. Additionally, our graduates should be able to understand climate change related policy and contribute meaningfully to implementation at all levels of national development.

SCHOOL OF NATURAL RESOURCES

  1. MSC/MPHIL/PHD ENVIRONMENT, WATER AND SUSTAINABILITY (PEWS)

Programme Description and Objectives:

The Postgraduate Programme (MSc./MPhil/PhD) in Environment and Water Sustainability (PEWS) at UENR, is uniquely designed (by a consortium of three departments: Environmental Management, Fisheries and Water Resources and Earth Observation Research and Innovation Centre (EORIC), in consultation with Environmental Protection Agency – Bono Regional Head Office, Ghana Water Company Ltd – Bono Regional Head Office, and Community Water and Sanitation Agency – Bono Regional Head Office) to train professionals, young scholars and individuals with the requisite competencies to contribute effectively to Ghana’s efforts in: (1) building resilience to increasing water scarcity, (2) addressing emerging environmental sustainability challenges of the 21st century relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) and national development frameworks, and (3) providing industrial demand – driven solutions to water and environmental problems. Students will study common courses in environment; sustainability and water related topics but could choose from either environment or water theme as their research focus and specialisation.

Target Audience:

The target participants are industry players from Ghana Water Company Limited, Community Water and Sanitation Agency, Mining Companies, Oil and Gas Companies, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and International Development Agencies that provide water and environmental solutions. Others include: Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development; Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; Water Resources Commission; Mineral Resource Commission; Environmental Protection Agency; Council for Scientific and Industrial Research; Ministry of Lands, Forestry and Mines; Mines Department and Private / Public Research Institutions. Individuals hoping to pursue academic and research careers are also encouraged to apply.

Duration:

  1. The MSc. Programme is professionally-tailored. It is scheduled to run over a period of 18 months consisting of two semesters of course work, and another semester of both course work as well as project report/semester paper. The project report/semester paper shall be industrial problem – solving and/ or demand-driven oriented. Students identify specific problem(s) with an industry in any of the critical areas, conduct scientific investigation and propose solutions to the problem.
  2. The duration of the MPhil programme is 24 months (two years). It entails two semesters of course work and two semesters of intense, independent scientific enquiry into any environmental or water related issue(s).
  • The Doctor of Philosophy degree programme runs for a minimum duration of six semesters (three years) and maximum of ten semesters (five years).

Available Session:

Presently, all programmes  run on full-time regular basis; however, lectures are held in the evenings (4:30 pm – 8:30 pm) during week (working) days.

Entry Requirements:

To be eligible for admission into the MSc./MPhil in Environment, Water and Sustainability programme, candidates must be graduates of this university or any university recognized by the Academic Board.

Applicants must have a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division) degree in the relevant field of studies (eg. natural resources management, water resources management, environmental sciences/ management, environmental planning, geography, environmental engineering, or related fields). In both instances, applicants must have a minimum of one (1) year post qualification working experience, and will be required to undergo a selection  interview.

To be eligible for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree programme in Environment, Water and Sustainability, applicants must have obtained a Master’s degree from this university or any university recognized by the Academic Board, with a strong potential to conduct independent research. Applicants must have a minimum of one (1) year post qualification working experience, and will be required to undergo a selection  interview.

  1. MPHIL SOCIAL FORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL GOVERNANCE

Programme Objectives:      

The objective of the programme is to train the requisite human resources for forest and environmental policy formulation, management and governance. Graduates of the programme would be capable of identifying challenges and providing interventions that harness environmental, social and rural development. Also, graduates would have a high sense of professionalism, committed to problem-solving, active in community partnership, and approach their work with integrity.

Target group:

Graduates in the field of Natural resources, Planning, Social Science, Human Geography, Agriculture or any related discipline from a recognized university are eligible to apply.

Duration:

MPhil: 2 years

Available Session:

Weekend only

Entry Requirements:

To be eligible for admission into the Master of Philosophy in Social Forestry and Environmental Governance programme, candidates must be graduates of this university or any other university recognized by the Academic Board, and should have obtained a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division) degree in the relevant field (e.g. Natural resources, Planning, Social Science, Human Geography and Agriculture). The applicant must complete National Service prior to the commencement of the academic year he/she is seeking to enroll into the programme. All applicants must undergo a selection interview.

HOW TO COMPLETE THE ADMISSION PROCESS

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Applicants should purchase an e-vouchers for Two Hundred and Fifty Ghana Cedis only (GHS 250) from the following points:

Upon payment of the application fee, the candidate will receive an e-voucher containing an application number and PIN that will grant access to the online admissions portal.

The candidate should then proceed to the online admissions portal admissions.uenr.edu.gh and begin the application process.

Once the process has been completed, candidates must print out three (3) copies of the completed application form from the portal and submit together with all the following relevant documents by courier services to the address provided below:

  • certified copies of all certificates
  • original copy of transcript(s)
  • two sealed referee reports
  • Research proposal
