What is IVF?

In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a complex medical procedure used to help with fertility or prevent genetic problems and assist with conception. The process involves the fertilization of a woman’s egg and a man’s sperm outside the human body.

The fertilized egg is then introduced into the uterus of the woman and eventually grows up into the baby.

The success rate of IVF varies widely depending on the age of the potential mother and many other factors. There is no verifiable data on the rates in Ghana. According to reports, the success rate for IVF in Ghana ranges from 40% to 70%. This, however, depends on a number of factors including the couple’s age and health status.

Cost of IVF in Ghana

There are several factors that influence the price of IVF in Ghana. Some of those factors include preferred gender, medical history of parents, investigations conducted etc.

Generally, the cost of IVF in Ghana ranges between GHS 12,000 – GHS 40,000 per cycle.

The total cost of doing IVF in Ghana covers the following:

  • Fertility medication
  • Couple’s initial testing.
  • Ultrasound and monitoring process.
  • ICSI – a process where a single sperm is injected into the egg.
  • Genetic testing of Embryo, PGD.

A cycle means one whole round of the treatment process from the first day of your period till when an embryo is placed inside the womb. This process typically lasts about 3 weeks.

Some facilities may even allow clients to pay in installments at certain phases or ‘milestones’ during the process. This makes it a bit flexible for clients to pay the relatively large costs involved.
