All qualifying individuals can go through the 10-minute application process online or by phone/fax/mail to their local county office to apply for the CalFresh program. They can also visit the county office in person. Applicants will need to include documents like ID, paystubs, or rent receipts.

Once you have submitted your application and gone through with the necessary documentation, you will receive a letter of confirmation or denial within 30 days. During the processing time, your local county office will confirm your eligibility, schedule an interview and verify all the paperwork. You may even need to submit some additional documents.

While waiting to get feedback, you can track your CalFresh application status via phone or an office visit.

  • You can track your CalFresh application status by calling your county office by phone, fax, or mail and requesting a status on your application. Preferably, call during business hours on weekdays.
  • Alternatively, you can visit your county office in person using the CalFresh County Office Locator Map to get directions. You can also call ahead and schedule an appointment prior to visiting.

When Will I Get my CalFresh EBT Card?

Once your application has been verified and approved, you’ll be issued an EBT card with money for groceries within 30 days.

You will get two separate pieces of mail containing your EBT Card and your PIN Number. Just like a debit card, you will need your PIN number to use your EBT card.

EBT cards are accepted at most grocery stores, corner stores, and farmer’s markets. Your benefit amount will be reloaded on your card every month.

Applicants who are 60+ or disabled or do not have access to cooking equipment may also qualify for the CalFresh prepared meals program.

Can I Get My CalFish Benefits Faster?

You may be eligible for Expedited Service, giving your county 3 days to process your application. Due to COVID-19, processing may be delayed several weeks.

You can qualify if:

  • your household makes less than $150 in monthly income and has less than $100 on hand right now; or
  • your household’s combined monthly income and money on hand are less than your household’s combined monthly rent and utilities; or
  • you are a migrant or seasonal farm worker and have less than $100 on hand right now.
