RIPS-DAAD Postgraduate Scholarships 2022/2023 at the University of Ghana

The Regional Institute for Population Studies (RIPS) at the University of Ghana is accepting applications for the award of the 2022/2023 German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarships to pursue Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Population Studies at RIPS.

RIPS is an important institution in anglophone Africa for the training of population scientists and generation of  high-quality research in population and related disciplines in order to provide solutions for solving development challenges in Ghana and beyond.

The DAAD scholarship will cover tuition, stipends and accommodation for one-year Master of Arts (MA) and four-year Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students.

DAAD scholarships can only be awarded to applicants who:

  • have successfully completed generally a three/four-year university degree for those
    applying to MA (duration of MA is one year) with above average results of SecondClass Upper Division or equivalent.
  • have successfully completed generally one- or two-years MA/MSc./MPH/MFA/MPhil,
    etc. university degree (for doctoral candidates) with above average results of
    Second Class Upper Division or equivalent (for First degree)
  • clearly show motivation and strong commitment
  • have thorough knowledge of the English language
  • have generally completed their last university degree not more than 6 years ago at
    the time of application
  • are nationals or permanent residents of a Sub-Saharan African country
    Women and people working in population-related sectors are encouraged to apply.

Application Requirements

Applications are received online through the admission portal provided. Applicants are required to uploaded the following documents:

MA applicants:

  • Undergraduate Certificate
  • Undergraduate Transcript
  • One-page motivational statement (Heading: Motivational Statement & your Name)
  • TOEFL/IELTS examination grades not more than two years old at the time of
    application (if applying as national or permanent resident of non-English speaking
    African country)

PhD applicants:

  • Graduate and Undergraduate Certificates
  • Graduate and Undergraduate Transcripts
  • One-page personal statement (Heading: Motivational Statement & your Name)
  • Research proposal (this must include a project title, problem statement [500-word
    limit], proposed research objective(s)/question(s) [100-word limit], methodology
    [900-word limit] and references) (3-page maximum, 1.5 line spacing)
  • TOEFL/IELTS examination grades not more than two years at the time of
    application (if applying as national or permanent resident of non-English speaking
    African country) (Exemption: if your Master’s dissertation/thesis was written in
    English)

Admission Process

Your admission process will go through the steps below. Please take note of deadlines.

1. Candidate’s application submitted to RIPS on or before January 14th, 2022
2. RIPS to submit shortlisted candidates to DAAD by February 4th, 2022.
3. DAAD will directly contact shortlisted candidates
4. Shortlisted candidates to submit their applications via DAAD portal by February 17th,
2022
5. Scholarship awardees to receive notification from DAAD at the appropriate time
6. All shortlisted candidates will be notified to apply to the University of Ghana for
admission when the admission portal for entrance to UG opens.
