Job Description

Job Title: CHIEF UNDERGROUND GEOLOGIST

Purpose

ONLY GHANAIAN NATIONALS ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR THIS ROLE

The role has a broad responsibility base that includes: management of all geological activity relating to Subika Underground mining; planning (1-5yr outlook), leading and controlling the activities of exploration, resource and mining geology whilst managing a team of geologists, drilling personnel and controlling the associated contracts in place.

Essential Duties

Operations

  • Develop and implement geology management systems, including reconciliation systems that monitor resource/reserve generation from exploration models through the production process to milled production.
  • Build and maintain collaborative internal and external relationships with key stakeholders and contractors for effective management of site processes and contracts and to maximize safety results, efficiencies, productivity and reduce costs.
  • Attendance and active participation in daily, weekly and monthly departmental/site meetings, leading by example in terms of professional conduct, positive attitudes and dedication to all business improvement initiatives.

Resource and Reserve Management

  • Implement strategies which ensure conversion of Resource and Reserve at conversion rates meeting mine depletion or higher, whilst ensuring compliance with Newmont Standards and responsibility for internal communication of Grade Control reporting and facilitation of external audits.
  • Guide and contribute to continuous improvement of geology modeling, grade control estimation and reconciliation procedures; ensure suitable and adequate data management procedures are in place to guarantee timely and accurate collation of geological data.
  • Support Site/Regional resource growth programs.

Planning, Reporting and Financial Management

  • Prepare and present budgets, LOM and business plans, and proactively manage and monitor all Geology department costs, with an understanding of cost budgeting and capital expenditure within the Newmont system.
  • Ensure that all periodic reporting for Site and Reconciliation is completed to agreed timelines, reviewed and to an acceptable standard.

Workforce Management

  • Ensure staff resources are maximized; implement and monitor performance and individual development plans for all direct reports, with staff members undertaking appropriate training and development so they are skilled to perform allocated duties efficiently.
  • Retain and develop key personnel with adequate succession planning in place for all roles.

Safety and Environment

  • Participate and contribute to safe practice and environmental awareness.
  • Actively participate in all Newmont Ghana safety and environmental systems and initiatives.
  • Demonstrate personal commitment in regard to safety and environmental practices.
  • Identification of potential hazards and action that is appropriately taken.
  • Maintenance of a high standard of efficiency, safety and effectiveness.
  • Raising, discussion and resolution of safety issues at regular meetings.

Become familiar with and strictly adhere to Newmont’s Health, Safety and Environmental standards. Act as a role model in complying with and supporting these standards and practices.

Training & Experience

Knowledge:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Geology with extensive related field experience.

Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years operational experience within different mining operations, with a minimum 5 years in both exploration and production geology and at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Familiarity and experience of the Ghanaian mining industry and associated mining regulations.
  • Previous gold mining experience, in particular in a large underground mine environment.

Working Conditions

Environmental Working Conditions

  • Combination of office and UG mining conditions.
  • Moist wet surfaces with section of continuous water fall.
  • Potential for extreme dust particles and high heat/humidity.
  • Noise exposure within the requirements for earplugs or/and ear muffs.
  • Dark environment which requires personal attachment of lit head gear.
  • Underground conditions include steep decline with section of uneven terrain.
  • Unventilated areas with asphyxiating gaseous environments.
  • Working with corrosive chemicals

Physical Requirements, Working Conditions, and Safety Requirements (HSLP) 

Employee must be able to work under the following conditions:

  • Operate small hand-held tools, such as disto, hammers weighing up to 5 lbs. Operate underground and surface vehicles on haulage roads including a pre-operational inspection, mounting and dismounting vehicle, pushing and pulling knobs and levers, and turning steering wheels.
  • Operate and hold a radio with sufficient voice and hearing to carry on a conversation for the purpose of following work assignments and providing feedback.
  • Read, comprehend, interpret and learn literature, Material Safety Data Sheets MSDS, labels on products, warning signs, instructional manuals and numbers on monitors and gauges, to prevent loss of personnel, property and process.
  • Wear personal protective equipment including hard hat, steel toe shoes, safety glasses, respirators, wet suits, earplugs, gloves, head lamp or any other equipment to perform duties safely.
  • Walk and stand on uneven and wet surfaces.
