1. Greater Accra
The Greatest Accra region might be the smallest region by landmass in Ghana occupying just 3,245 square kilometers. However, it’s the most populated with a total population of 5,446,237.
Accra is the Greater Accra Region’s economic and administrative hub, with its central business district containing banks, department stores, and Ghana’s government administrative offices.
2. Ashanti Region
Second on the list of the most populous regions in Ghana is the Ashanti region with a population size of 5,432,486. Previously, Ashanti was the most populous region in Ghana.
The Ashanti Region is located in south Ghana and it is the third largest of 16 administrative regions, occupying a total land surface of 24,389 km2 (9,417 sq mi) or 10.2 percent of the total land area of Ghana.
3. Eastern Region
The Eastern region is located in the south of Ghana and covers an area of 19,323 square kilometers, which is about 8.1% of Ghana’s total landform. The region has a population size of 2,917,039.
4. Central Region
Next on the list is Central region with a population size of 2,859,821. The Central region is renowned for its many elite higher education institutions and an economy based on an abundance of industrial minerals and tourism.
5. Northern Region
The Northern region is located in the north of the country and was the largest of the sixteen regions, covering an area of 70,384 square kilometers until 2018. According to the 2021 census result, the Northern region has a population size of 2,310,943.

The Volta region is located west of the Republic of Togo and to the east of Lake Volta. According to the 2021 census conducted by PHC, Volta Region has a population size of 1,649,523.
8. Upper East
The Upper East Region occupying a total land surface of 8,842 square kilometers or 2.7 percent of the total land area of Ghana. The region has a total population size of 1,301,221.
9. Bono
The Bono region is one of the 16 administrative regions of Ghana. It is the remains of Brong -Ahafo region following the creation of the Bono East Region and the Ahafo region. The Bono region has a population size of 1,208,965.
10. Bono East
Bono East region is one of the newly created regions in Ghana. Carved out of Brong Ahafo Region, the Bono East region has a population size of 1,203,306.
