KNUST Doctoral Scholarship 2021/2022 for African Students

The O.R. Tambo Research Chair for Technology Entrepreneurship, with funding from the National Research Foundation of South Africa, invites eligible candidates in Ghana and other African countries to apply for scholarship awards to study doctoral programme (i.e., Ph.D.) in Technology Entrepreneurship at the School of Business of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Category of Scholarship Awards Available

The Scholarships to be awarded by the Chair are categorised into full, partial and fee waiver scholarship awards. The category of scholarship awards to be given to an applicant will be dependent upon the economic needs of an applicant as determined by the scholarship award committee.

Full Scholarship Awards

This will cover:

  • tuition fees and other charges waiver;
  • monthly stipend;
  • hostel accommodation; and
  • research grants (e.g., fieldwork, data analysis, etc.)

The following two items apply to international (African) students only:

  • one round-trip flight ticket; and
  • international travel insurance cover.

Partial Scholarship Awards

This will cover:

  • tuition fees and other charges waiver;
  • hostel accommodation; and
  • research grants (e.g., fieldwork, data analysis, etc.)

The following two items apply to international (African) students only:

  • one round-trip flight ticket; and
  • international travel insurance cover.

Tuition Waiver Scholarship Award

This will cover:

  • tuition fees and other charges waiver; and
  • research grants (e.g., fieldwork, data analysis, etc.)

All applicants are required to indicate on their fee-paying form their willingness or otherwise to be enrolled as self-financing students with alternative means of sponsorship in case they do not qualify for the scholarship award.

Requirements for award of scholarships:

In conformity with the entry requirement at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, successful candidates must be in possession of the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with first-class or second class (upper division) honours (please submit your certificates and academic transcripts as evidence).
  • For applicants whose bachelor’s degree is not provided in English, possession of an internationally recognised Certificate of Proficiency in the English Language (i.e., TOEFL or IELTS) with an above-average score is required.

Additional requirements: All successful applicants will be required to:

  • demonstrate economic need for which reason they should be supported financially to enrol on the doctoral programme at KNUST;
  • required to hold citizenship of Ghana or another African country. Non-Ghanaian African applicants must demonstrate possession of a student visa to legally study at KNUST;
  • show evidence of admission to admission to the PhD in Business and Management (Technology Entrepreneurship) programme at KNUST;
  • complete and submit the Scholarship Application form;
  • complete and submit the economic needs assessment form; and
  • commit to full-time availability for the entire period of study.

  1. Completed scholarship application form
  2. Completed economic needs assessment form
  3. Completed fee-paying form
  4. Curriculum vitae (two pages maximum)
  5. Two reference letters
  6. Proof of English proficiency
  7. Official transcripts for bachelor and master degrees
  8. Certified copies of official bachelor and master degree certificates
  9. Two recent passport-sized photographs
  10. Evidence of current and previous employment (if applicable)
  11. Submit both soft and hard copies of a letter of motivation (max. one page) with the heading “O.R. Tambo Scholarship Award” outlining the following:
  • Why you want to study technology entrepreneurship at the doctoral level
  • Why you are well-suited to study this programme
  • Why you need financial support to be able to successfully complete the doctoral programme
  • How your admission into this programme will fit into your professional vision
  • How your home country stands to benefit after your training on this programme
  • You may also add other relevant information and/or experience you feel are necessary to support your application

  1. Application deadline is 5:00 pm on Monday November 15th, 2021.
  2. Kindly upload your supporting documents in a single zip file. Supporting documents in French must have an official English translation in addition
  3. Ineligible, incomplete or late applications will not be processed.
  4. Only shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview scheduled for November 27th and 28th, 2021.
