KNUST Basic School Wins Maiden Science And Maths Quiz

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Basic School has emerged winners of the Maiden Junior Science and Mathematics Quiz organised by the College of Science (CoS) and ERIDEC Ghana Limited.

With 70 points, they beat eight other schools to become winners of the competition. Prempeh College Basic School and Victory Baptist School placed second and third with 58 and 48.5 points respectively.

Other schools who participated in the competition are Afaus Lovely School, Good Shepherd Roman Catholic School, Bomso M/A Basic School, RAKHO School and Opoku Ware Basic School.

Speaking at the event, Professor Kwasi Preko, Chairperson and member of faculty, said science and technology are fundamental to the development and progress of any nation. Technology he said plays a key role in the improvement of quality of life, wealth creation, economic growth and the transformation of any society.

He stated that there are several myths that have created a societal phobia against the study of science and mathematics, especially at the lower levels of education. These he said creates a block in the path of those who have the potential to develop a career in science and mathematics. According to Professor Preko, in line with the College’s goal to become a Centre of Excellence for the training of mathematics and science graduates the College believes that it engages actively in demystifying the sciences and make it friendly to all at the basic levels of education. He hoped the competition becomes a national one in the next five years.

Dr. Marian Asantewaa Nkansah, a member of Faculty, used the occasion to educate the pupils on environmental sanitation.  Dr. Asantewaa Nkansah cautioned them against improper disposal of waste especially plastic waste. She advised them to reduce, reuse and recycle as too many plastics have taken over the environment and are causing problems.
