KNUST To Commence B.Ed Degree Programme In October 2019

As part of government’s policy to introduce new teacher education curriculum into the five (5) public Universities in Ghana, Institute of Educational Studies (IES) of the College of Art and Built Environment and other stakeholders have held a workshop towards this initiative. The purpose of the workshop was to throw more light on Transforming Teacher Education and Learning (T-Tel) programme and deliberate on strengthening the relationship with the affiliate Colleges of Education.

In his presentation on the new teacher education curriculum, Mr. Akwasi Addae Banahene, a key Advisor of Ministry of Education stated the new curriculum for the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) is the culmination of interagency collaboration led by the Ministry of Education since 2014. ‘The four-year B.Ed. curriculum focuses on teaching practice, to ensure ­that student teachers are fully prepared to teach as soon as they take up their first teaching roles. In the second year, student teachers would specialize in a course of their choice, to support and inspire the next generation of Ghanaian children, he elaborated.

Mr. Addae stated that KNUST would offer faculty, assessment and certification as well as staff capacity building services to the Colleges of Education. These roles and responsibilities he said are set out in the Affiliation Agreements between the five (5) Universities and their affiliated Colleges of Education.

Professor Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson, the Pro Vice Chancellor of KNUST promised KNUST’s utmost commitment to promote the government’s initiative by collaborating and mentoring the affiliated Colleges of Education.  ‘Even though KNUST just set up the Institute of Educational Studies, there are various members of the University who started their career in teaching, hence are equipped to help run the programme’ she said.

She assured that KNUST would collaborate with Wesley, Evangelical Presbyterian, Bimbilla, Akrokerri, St. Joseph and Tamale Colleges of Education to develop capacity to deliver.

In an exclusive interview with Professor Imoro Braimah, Provost of College of Humanities and Social Sciences, he said the purpose of the new B.Ed programme is to train new set of teachers who would be licensed before they teach. He added that KNUST has designed various Top-up programmes for teachers, which would commence in October 2019. Prof. Imoro considers that this is the era to revolutionise teaching and learning, hence is very excited about this new initiative.
