The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is a non-profit research organisation with headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and offices across Africa and Asia. Research at the Institute focuses on improving how water and land resources are managed, with the aim of underpinning food security and reducing poverty while safeguarding vital environmental processes.
As water becomes scarcer, there is a growing need to find ways to produce sufficient food to feed the world’s expanding population, while using less water, safeguarding fragile environmental services and without having much opportunity to open up new agricultural lands. The Institute undertakes research projects with this aim in mind.

Role
Finance
- Oversee the financial operations of the country office and ensure timely delivery of financial reports, including cash and bank management, payroll, ledgers and other aspects of the country’s financial management.
- Responsible for entering financial information, timely month end closing, and maintaining all financial records for projects and for the organization.
- Prepare, examine or analyze accounting records, financial statements or other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness and conformance to reporting and procedural standards.
- Liaise with the Project Finance Specialists in the monitoring and review of partners reports.
- Manage financial controls, analyze office and project budgets, and make recommendations on budget expenditure. Monitor the expenditure to ensure that program funds are utilized appropriately by the close of the fiscal year.
- Support the Country Manager and Project Managers, in coordination with the Project Finance Specialist, with project budget monitoring and review.
- Ensure that all financial reporting is completed on time.
- Oversee the country statutory annual audits.
- Responsible for the administration of insurance, contracting and administrating services in according to the CIP’s standards and policies.
- Responsible for country legal and statutory compliance.
- Compute taxes owed and prepare tax returns, ensuring compliance with payment, reporting or other tax requirements.
- Manage fixed assets of CIP, and review and support the preparation of inventories.
- Responsible for procurement of goods and services.
- Responsible for the coordination of information technology (IT) issues with headquarters, serving as IT key user.
Administration
People (Human Resources)
- In coordination with headquarters, advice and support staff and managers on all aspects of employee relations (from recruitment to departure), and help them to interpret and apply human resource (HR) policies and practices in day-to-day work.
- Be accountable for the compliance of the national and international health and safety laws, regulations and standards.
- Oversee payroll administration and maintain detailed records and documentation of payroll functions for audit purposes, in accordance with legal requirements.
- Prepare reports and provide recommendations to monitor significant trends (i.e., inflation), emerging opportunities and challenges in the areas of responsibility.
Grants and Contracts
- Coordinate contract-related actions with the Grants and Contracts (G&C) team. This will require follow up on project management-related activities such as signature and agreements or reporting on need basis.
- Liaise with the G&C office to monitor deliverables reporting for grants applicable to the operations in the country.
Requirements
- University degree in accounting, business administration or equivalent profession status awarded by a relevant professional institute
Experience and knowledge
- At least 3 years of experience in administration and finance management
- Experience of working with CGIAR (specifically CIP) is an advantage
- Fluent in English and Twi
- Good knowledge of rules, regulations and procedures of government and related agencies
- Knowledge of French

- Ability to work independently and to take initiative when sorting out issues
- Computer literacy in Word and Excel
- Experience with online banking systems
