GHANA PRISONS SERVICE RECRUITMENT CRITERIA
GENERAL ELIGIBILITY – SENIOR OFFICERS CATEGORY
An applicant must:
- Be a Ghanaian citizen by birth with no criminal record.
- Have completed his/her National Service.
- Be computer literate.
- Be of a minimum age of 18 and not more than 35 years by 1st November 2025.
- Be physically and medically fit by the Prisons Service standard.
- Not bonded by any organisation.
- Not have been dismissed from any public service or any other employment
- Be of a minimum height of 1.68 m (5’6”) for males and 1.57m (5’2”) for females
- Have an active e-mail account and a mobile phone number.
- Be ready to undergo paramilitary training and other physical training.
- Medical professionals must have completed one (1) year post housemanship with a registered hospital or clinic.
CATEGORIES & THEIR REQUIREMENTS
1. GENERAL DUTIES
In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must have a minimum of first degree from an accredited university not below second class (lower division) in any of the following areas and a minimum of one (1) year post qualification work experience. Any additional qualification will be an added advantage.
(a) Humanities and Social Sciences

3. EDUCATION
In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must have a minimum of first degree from an accredited university not below second class (lower division) in any of the following areas and a minimum of one (1) year post-qualification work experience.

4. LEGAL OFFICERS
In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must have a minimum of LLB/BL, and must have been called to the Bar with at least one (1) year post-qualification work experience.
5. MEDICAL CATEGORY
A. MEDICAL DOCTORS
In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must at least possess Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), or Medical Doctor (MD) from an accredited university, and must be registered with the Medical and Dental Council.
B. DENTAL SURGEONS
In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must at least possess Bachelor of DENTAL Surgery (BDS) from an accredited university, and must be registered with the Medical and Dental Council.
C. OPHTHALMOLOGIST
In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must at least possess MBBS/MD in Ophthalmology from an accredited university, and must be registered with the relevant professional regulatory body.
D. PHARMACISTS
In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must at least possess BSc. Pharmacy (B. Pharm/Pharm D.) from an accredited university, and must be a registered member of the Ghana Pharmacy Council.
F MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST
In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must at least possess B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited university, and must be a registered member of the Allied Health Professions Council with one. (1) year post qualification experience.
G. NURSING OFFICERS
- General Nurses
- Midwives
- Public Health Nurses
- Community Mental Health Nurses
- Ear, Nose and Throat Nurses
- Ophthalmic Nurses
In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must have at least a first degree from an accredited university in the relevant field with one (1) year post-qualification experience, and must be registered with a professional regulatory body such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Allied Health Professions Council etc.
H. OTHER HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must possess at least a first degree from an accredited university in the relevant field with one (1) year post-qualification experience, and must be registered with a professional regulatory body such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Allied Health Professions Council etc.
I. PROCUREMENT/SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT
In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must have at least a first degree from accredited university and not below second class (lower division) in Procurement/Supply Chain Management with one (1) year post-qualification experience.
J. PUBLIC AFFAIRS
In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must have at least
a) A first degree from an accredited university not below second class (lower division) in any of the following: Communication Studies, Public Relations, or Journalism.
b) A first degree from an accredited university not below second class (lower division) in any discipline plus a Diploma in Communication Studies/Public Relations/Journalism.
c) Previous work experience will be an added advantage.
K. STATISTICIANS
In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must have at least a first degree from accredited university and not below second class (lower division) in Staistics or Mathematics with one (1) year post-qualification experience.
L. TECHNICAL OFFICERS
In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must have at least a first degree from accredited university and not below second class (lower division) in the following areas:
- BSc. Land Economy
- BSc. Building Technology
- BSc. Quantity Surveying and Construction Technology
- BSc. Construction Technology and Management
- BSc. Civil Engineering
- BSc. Mechanical Engineering
- BSc. Electrical Engineering
- BSc. Geometrics Engineering (Land Surveying)
N/B: Previous work experience will be an added advantage.
M. RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS
In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must be:
A. ORDAINED MINISTER OR CHAPLAIN
Have at least a first degree in Theology. Be of good standing in a Christian denomination approved by any of the following bodies; the Ghana Catholic Secretariat, the Christian Council of Ghana, the Pentecostal Council of Ghana or other recognized Christian bodies.
B. IMAM
- Have at least a first degree in Islamic Studies with an excellent knowledge in Arabic.
- Be of good standing in a Muslim denomination approved by any of the following bodies, the office of the National/Regional Chief Imam, the office of the Ameer of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission or other similar nationally recognized Muslim bodies.
N. CREATIVE ARTS & CULTURE
- Theatrical Music Composers
- Drama & Play Writers
- Any other relevant creative art and culture discipline
In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must possess a first degree from an accredited university bot below second class (Lower Division) with one (1) year post-qualification experience.
NOTE:
For the Senior Officer’s category apart from Medical Doctors, Dental Surgeon, Opthalmologist, Pharmacist with (Pharm D) and legal officers as indicated above that will be placed on the rank of Deputy Superindentent of Prisons (DSP), all other graduates shall start from Assistant Superintendent of Prisons (AS) after completion of training.
GENERAL ELIGIBILITY- JUNIOR OFFICERS CATEGORY
An applicant must:
- Be a Ghanaian
- Be of good character and without any criminal record.
- Be physically and medically fit by Prisons Service standards.
- Be of a minimum age of 18 and not more than 32 years by 1st November 2025.
- Be a minimum age of 18 and not more than 35 years by 1st November, 2025 (for artisans, tradesmen, and professionals only).
- Minimum academic qualification of BECE with at least five (5) passes.
- Not be dismissed from any public service or any other employment.
- Be of a minimum height of 1.68 m (5’6”) for males and 1.57m (5’2”) for females
- Be able to write and speak English fluently.
- Have an active e-mail account and a mobile phone number.
- Be ready to undergo Prisons training and other physical training.
- Be registered with the appropriate professional body and hold a valid PIN (for medical category).
CATEGORIES & THEIR REQUIREMENTS
1. GENERAL DUTIES
In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must possess at least SSSCE/WASSCE with at least five (5) passess. Candidates with a pass in English or Mathematics will be an added advantage. Also candidates with at least a Stenographer Certificate (COTVET/NVTI)/Stenographer I & II Certificate can apply.

19. Nurse Assistant
Must possess a certificate in Nurse Assistant clinical or Nurse Assistant Preventive from an accredited institution, be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, with one year practical work experience.
3. AGRICULTURE
a) General Agric
In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must possess at least and HND or Diploma or Certificate in General Agric from an accredited institution with one (1) year practical work experience.
b) Veterinary/Animal Health
In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must possess at least and HND or Diploma or Certificate in General Agric from an accredited institution with one (1) year practical work experience.
c) Tractor Operators/Mechanics
In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must possess at least one of the following certificates with one year practical work experience and should be able to repair tractors.
- Ghana Education Service (GES) Intermediate Certificate in either Tractor Operating or Mechanic
- Ghana Education Service (GES) or COTVET Certificate II in Tractor Operating or Mechanic.
d) Horticulturist
In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must possess any of the following certificates from an accredited institution with one year practical work experience.
- Higher National Diploma (HND)
- Diploma or Certificate in Horticulture
- NVTI I & II Certificate in Horticulture.

- Ghana Education Service (GES) Intermediate Certificate in the relevant field
- Ghana Education Service (GES) or COTVET Certificate II in the relevant field
- City and Guilds (Intermediate) Certificate in the relevant field
- NVTI I & II or Trade Test Certificate II in the relevant field.
33. Drivers and Motor Riders
In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must possess
- Professional Drivers’ Licence not less than Class B with one year driving experience.
- Professional Drivers’ Licence A with one year riding experience.
34. Building Technology
In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must possess a Higher National Diploma or Diploma from an accredited institution with one year work experience.
35. Furniture and Designing
In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must possess a Higher National Diploma or Diploma from an accredited institution with one year work experience.
5. OPERATORS
Weapons Mechanics/Fitters
In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must possess NVTI I & II or Trade Test Certificate II in Weapon Mechanic or Fitting with one year practical work experience.
NB: Having a license in Weapon Mechanic or Fitting would be an advantage.
6. MUSIC (DANCE BAND & REGIMENTAL)
In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must possess at least Ghana Education Service (GES) Intermediate Certificate/COTVET Certificate II/NVTI Grade I or Trade Test Certificate II/City and Guilds (Intermediate or Proficiency in Basic Music (ABRSM) grade 4 and the following:
- Ability to sight-read musical notes
- Ability to play Wood Wind or Brass instruments and any other dance band instrument.
7. CATERING
In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must possess qualification as specified below with one year practical work experience.
- NVTI Grade I or Trade Test Certificate II in Hospitality and Catering Management.
- Ghana Education Service (GES) Intermediate Certificate or COTVET Certificate II In Hospitality and Catering Management.
- City and Guilds (Intermediate) in the above.
8. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY/COMMUNICATION
In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must possess qualification as specified below from an accredited institution with one year work experience.
a. Radio/Telephone/Telecom Technicians
Applicants must possess at least any of the following
- NVTI I&II/City and Guilds Certificate in Electronics
- NVTI I &/City and Guilds Certificate in Telecommunication
b. Networking Technicians
Applicants must possess at least N+ Certificate from a recognised institution including knowledge in LINUX/Windows Server 2003, 2008 and abover.
c. Database Administrators
Applicants must possess at least Certificate in MySOL, SOL, and Oracle from a recognized institution.
d. Web Designers
Applicants must possess at least Certificate in HTML, PHP, CSS, CMS, Adobe, and Photoshop from a recognized institution.
e. Office & Industrial Machine Mechanics (Photocopies and Printer Repairers)
- GES Intermediate Certificate0COTVET Certificate II in Office Machines or Industrial Mechanics
- City and Guilds Certificate in Electronics
f. Computer Hardware Technicians
Applicants must possess at least any of the following:
- COTVET Certificate II in Computer Hardware
- NVTI I&II/City and Guilds Certificate in Computer Hardware
- NVTI I&/City and Guilds Certificate in Computer Hardware.
g. Satellite Dish Technicians
Applicants must possess at least any of the following:
- COTVET Certificate II in Computer Hardware
- NVTI I&II/City and Guilds Certificate in Computer Hardware
- NVTI I&/City and Guilds Certificate in Computer Hardware.

NOTE:
- For the Junior Officer’s category, it must be noted that apart from applicants with Diplome/HND in Agriculture and Health related programmes, as indicated above that will be placed on the rank of Sergeant, all other applicants shall start from Second Class Officer Rank after completion of training.
