Fully Funded Google Ph.D. Fellowship Program

Google Ph.D. Fellowship students are a select group recognized by Google researchers and their institutions as some of the most promising young academics in the world. The Fellowships are awarded to students who represent the future of research in the following fields:

  • Algorithms, Optimizations, and Markets
  • Computational Neural and Cognitive Sciences
  • Health Research
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Machine Learning
  • Machine Perception, Speech Technology, and Computer Vision
  • Mobile Computing
  • Natural Language Processing (including Information Retrieval and Extraction)
  • Privacy and Security
  • Programming Languages and Software Engineering
  • Quantum Computing
  • Recommender Systems
  • Structured Data and Database Management
  • Systems and Networking

Degree Level:

Fully Funded Google Ph.D. Fellowship Program 2022 is available to undertake Fellowship level programs at Australian Universities, New Zealand Universities, USA Universities, Canada Universities, Africa Universities, and India Universities.

Google will provide fully-funded scholarships to the selected Ph.D. students.

Eligible Nationalities:

All Nationalities

Eligibility Criteria:

Nominated students in Australia and New Zealand, East Asia, Europe, the United States, and Canada

Universities should only nominate students that meet the following requirements:

  • Full-time graduate students pursuing a Ph.D. and enrolled in an institution in one of the regions listed above.
  • Completed graduate coursework by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins.
  • Students must remain enrolled full-time in the Ph.D. program for the duration of the Fellowship or forfeit the award.
  • Google employees, and their spouses, children, and members of their households are not eligible.
  • Students that are already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible. Government or non-profit organization funding is exempt.
  • AU/NZ only: Early-stage students enrolled in the first or second year of their Ph.D. (no requirement for completion of graduate coursework by the academic award year).
Direct applicant students in Africa, India, and Southeast Asia
  • Full-time graduate students pursuing a Ph.D. and enrolled in an African, Indian or Southeast Asian* institution.
    • Undergraduate or Master’s students and professionals may apply.
    • Undergraduate and Master’s student applicants must be currently enrolled, full-time students at an African, Indian, or Southeast Asian university.
    • Professionals must be employed/affiliated with an organization registered in Africa, India, or Southeast Asia.
    • For these applicants, the Fellowship award shall be contingent on the awardee registering for a full-time Ph.D. program of an African, Indian, or Southeast Asian university in computer science (or an adjacent field) within the calendar year of the Fellowship award, or the award shall be forfeited.
    • Grant of the Fellowship does not mean admission to the Ph.D. program of a university. The awardee must also complete the Ph.D. admission process of the respective institute/university where they wish to register for a Ph.D.
    • Grant of the Fellowship will be subject to the rules and guidelines applicable in the institute/university where the awardee registers for the Ph.D. program.
    • Students must remain enrolled full-time in the Ph.D. program for the duration of the Fellowship or forfeit the award.
    • Google employees, and their spouses, children, and members of their households are not eligible.
    • Students that are already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible. Government or non-profit organization funding is exempt.

*Countries eligible for the Ph.D. Fellowship in Southeast Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

How to Apply

Submission forms are available on the main Google Ph.D. Fellowship Program page when the application period begins.

Australia and New Zealand

For each student nomination, the university will be asked to submit the following material in a single PDF file:

  1. Student CV with links to website and publications (if available)
  2. Short (1-page) CV of the student’s primary advisor
  3. Transcripts of current and previous academic records
  4. 2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the nominee’s work (at least one from the thesis advisor)
  5. Research/dissertation proposal including references (maximum 8 pages)

East Asia, Europe, the United States, and Canada

For each student nomination, the university will be asked to submit the following material in a single PDF file:

  1. Cover sheet signed by the Department Chair confirming the student passes eligibility requirements. (See FAQ “What are the eligibility requirements for students?”)
  2. Student CV with links to website and publications (if available)
  3. Short (1-page) CV of the student’s primary advisor
  4. 2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the nominee’s work (at least one from the thesis advisor)
  5. Research/dissertation proposal including references (maximum 8 pages)
  6. Student essay response (350-word limit) to Describe the desired impact your research will make on the field and society, and why this is important to you. Include any personal, educational, and/or professional experiences that have motivated your research interests.
  7. Student essay response (350-word limit) to Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time. (A leadership role can mean more than just a title. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge of a specific task, or taking the lead role in organizing an event or project. Think about what you accomplished and what you learned from the experience. What were your responsibilities? Did you lead a team? How did your experience change your perspective on leading others? Did you help to resolve an important dispute at your school, church, in your community, or organization? And your leadership role doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to school activities. For example, do you help out or take care of your family?)
  8. Transcripts of current and previous academic records

Africa, India, and Southeast Asia

Students will need the following documents in order to complete an application (in English only):

  1. Student applicant’s resume with links to website and publications (if available)
  2. Available transcripts (mark sheets) starting from the first year/semester of Bachelor’s degree to date
  3. Research proposal (maximum 3 pages, excluding references)
  4. 2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the applicant’s work (at least one from the thesis advisor for current Ph.D. students)
  5. Africa only:
    • Short (one-page) resume of the student’s Ph.D. program advisor
    • Applicant’s essay response (350-word limit) to What impact would receiving this scholarship have on your education? Describe any circumstances affecting your need for a scholarship and what educational goals this scholarship will enable you to accomplish.
