Accra Technical University Matriculates Over 8,000 Students
Accra Technical University has for the first time in its history enrolled over 8,000 students including officers and men from the Military Academy and Training Schools (MATS). The students, who have been admitted for the 2020/2021 academic year will pursue various Degree, Higher National Diploma and professional courses in the areas of engineering, applied sciences and arts, built environment, and business.
Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Samuel Nii Odai who said this at the Virtual Matriculation ceremony Wednesday, March 17, 2021, attributed the increment to the university ‘‘gradually becoming a choice.’’
He added that as a result of the increment, the Governing Council of the University has directed the immediate development of its second campus at Samsam near Amasaman. He further revealed ‘‘for the first time, the Engineering students will be having their practical workshops in the ultramodern workshops on that campus.’’
Prof Odai intimated that to maintain a safe environment through the coronavirus pandemic, the University was enforcing new norms and behavioural changes, and added that Management will continue to provide the necessary PPE such as hand hygiene set-ups at vantage spots on campus to make life safe and livable on campus.
He summed up his address by advising the matriculants to maintain strict compliance with rules governing academic work and diligently pursue the primary reason for their enrollment. ‘‘My dear matriculants, what you sow today, you will reap decades later. It will be impossible to change the seeds in your old age. Therefore sow seeds of hard work, discipline and godliness. Associate with friends who will challenge you and make you discover your potential. . .’’
The Commandant of the MATS, Major General Charles Kodjo Awity, who joined the virtual ceremony from the comfort of his office congratulated all the matriculants especially those from MATS and advised that they uphold the University’s motto of ‘‘Integrity, Creativity and Excellence’’ at all times.
The Registrar, Mrs. Beatrice Sylvia Oppong-Mensah, administered the matriculation oath.
The matriculation ceremony was held virtually in satisfaction with the coronavirus guidelines on public gathering.
