343 Foundation Students Admitted Into Obuasi Satellite Campus

Three Hundred and Forty-Three (343) students have been admitted into the Obuasi Satellite Campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). The newly admitted pioneer students comprise 238 males and 105 females.

Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso, the Vice-Chancellor, revealed this at the maiden matriculation ceremony held for newly admitted students of the Obuasi Campus. He noted that the establishment of the Obuasi Campus offers an additional opportunity to contribute to the President’s vision of expanding access to education in Ghana through the Free SHS Policy.

Professor Obiri-Danso was confident that the additional campus would enable the University absorb the overflow of applicants in 2020.  He used the occasion to advise the students to adhere to the rules of the University and to study diligently.

Giving a background to the Satellite Campus, the Vice-Chancellor stated that the idea of the Obuasi campus commenced sequel to the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo magnanimously agreeing to its establishment during the reopening ceremony of the Obuasi Mines in the presence of the Chancellor Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The University welcomed the idea since it was in line with its strategic plan to increase access to science and technology education in the country. He thanked his predecessors, Professor William Otoo Ellis and Professor Kwasi Kwafo Adarkwa for their enormous roles in the realization of the Obuasi campus project.

The Registrar, Mr. Andrews K. Boateng, administered the matriculation oath to the newly admitted students.

Representing the KNUST Counselling Centre (KCC), Ms. Akua Afriyie Addai, said the Centre exists to equip students with the necessary emotional and psychological support to succeed. She continued that the Centre embarks on advocacy on mental health, mentoring for effective transition into the job market, psycho educational services and collaborates with other institutions and facilities.

Ms. Afriyie Addai also informed the students of the annual counseling and emotional support week. She revealed that KNUST is the only University in Ghana that has a counselor allocated to every college and residential hall. She therefore encouraged the students to patronise the centre and its services.

The KNUST Obuasi campus offers Bachelor of Science (BSc.) programmes in Civil, Geological, Geomatic, Materials, Mechanical, Metallurgical, Engineering, Environmental Science and Bachelor of Business Administration (Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Business Information Technology and Human Resource Management).
