WHO Postdoctoral Research in Cancer Studies 2020 for Developing Countries

A postdoctoral scientist opportunity is available in the IARC Section of Environment and Radiation, to contribute to various cancer research studies in Africa, primarily the African Breast Cancer – Disparities in Outcomes cohort ABC-DO.

WHO Postdoctoral Research in Cancer Studies

The ABC-DO cohort investigates multi-dimensional factors contributing to low breast cancer survival across five sub-Saharan African countries. This cohort of 2200 women with breast cancer, initiated in 2014, will be followed for a further two years.

The selected candidate will interact closely with Dr Valerie McCormack and with the teams across sub-Saharan Africa. The current postdoctoral opportunity will involve analyses and drafting of manuscripts based on existing ABC-DO data, e.g. on quality-of-life, survival analyses, social
inequalities, treatment adherence and adverse events. The candidate will also be involved in fieldwork co-ordination, travel when permitting, grant writing and reporting to funders.

WHO Postdoctoral Research in Cancer Studies Eligibility

The successful candidate would ideally have:

• a PhD in epidemiology or biostatistics
• strong statistical analytical and programming skills ideally in STATA
• excellent English language communication skills
• experience in cancer research, survival analysis or research in Africa

Applications from women and from nationals from low- and middle-income countries are particularly encouraged. IARC welcomes around 40 postdoctoral scientists, at any one time, distributed across its sixteen research groups.

Value of Award: The current IARC postdoctoral stipend is €2,820 per month. The cost of travel, and in certain circumstances for dependants, will be met, a dependant’s allowance paid, and health insurance covered. Postdoctoral scientists at IARC have access to a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines and to a unique network of collaborators across the world.

Duration of Award: The opportunity is initially for a period of 12 months.
