UG-GMES Innovation Challenge 2019 for Africans

Applications are open for interested and suitably qualified candidates for the University of Ghana (UG)-GMES innovation challenge 2019. Interested candidates should access the UG-GMES challenge application form below.

 

The Marine and Coastal Areas Management in Western Africa project (located within the University) is calling for applications to participate in the Innovation Challenge sponsored by the project. The call focuses on apps and communication tools to be developed to address issues in the following categories

• Ocean state monitoring

• Monitoring Fishing activities

• Coastal Environment Monitoring

The Innovation Challenge competition is open to the following categories of applicants (App developers, Animators, Graphic designers / Comic creators…) operating in Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone and The Gambia.

Competition Guidelines

This competition is open to the following categories of applicants (App developers, Animators, Graphic designers / Comic creators) operating in Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia,
Sierra Leone and The Gambia

  • Registered companies
  • Start-ups
  • Freelance developers

The apps and communication tools developed should address issues in the following categories

  • Ocean state monitoring
  • Monitoring Fishing activities
  • Coastal Environment Monitoring

Purpose of the Innovation Challenge

Design mobile applications and communication tools to support the sustainable utilization of marine and coastal resources, and contribute to actions that will reduce degradation of coastal ecosystems.

How to Apply for UG-GMES Innovation Challenge

Applicants should submit a concept note not more than 1000 words + pictures/graphs + optional video/other data to rmc@ug.edu.gh with email subject Innovation Challenge En2019.

Deadline for registration and submission of concept note is Friday May 31, 2019.

Selected applicants will be invited to pitch their ideas and showcase sample products on a date to be communicated. The evaluation committee will choose six (6), finalists at the end of July, who will receive up to Euros 2,000 each after the completion of the app/tool/product.

The criteria for the selection may fall under the following categories:

  • Integration with the GMES and Africa Geoportal
  • Developed using open source tools
  • Educational potential
  • Commercial potential
  • Social and cultural impact
  • Communication, creativity and innovation

Final Competition

The finalists will be given two (2) months for app/tool/product development until 30th September 2019, when they will need to submit their final output to the organizers.
Finally, a public event will be organized to demonstrate the best products. The winners will receive a further Euros 3,000 at the event in Accra in October 2019.
