Travel Insurance is Compulsory for Schengen Visa
Your travel insurance must cover the entire period of your stay and be valid throughout the territory of all the Schengen states: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
The travel insurance is intended to cover all expenses that may be caused by trip cancellation, baggage loss, accident, medical care, and possible repatriation. You’ll be denied a Schengen visa if you use a substandard insurance cover. Moreover, you enjoy all the insurance policy has to offer including free medical care while abroad.
Minimum Amount For Schengen Travel Insurance
The minimum coverage for Schengen travel insurance is 30,000 EURÂ (equivalent to 50,000 USD). The travel insurance policy must cover any expenses which might arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent health attention and/or emergency hospital treatment or death.
The standard insurance policy is designated to protect you when visiting Schengen Areas. And it must be applicable to any of the 26 states of the Schengen countries.
You may be refused a Schengen visa application if your insurance is less than the requirement. You might ask where do I get this amount of money? Well, no one expects you to have 30,000 EUR in your account before applying for a Schengen visa. This fee will be provided by the accredited insurance company in Ghana.
Duration of Schengen Travel Insurance
The Schengen travel insurance must be cover your period of stay in a Schengen region. It must also be valid throughout all the Schengen states. If you intend to visit a Schengen state for 60 days, your insurance policy must be valid for at least 60 days. It’s even better if your cover exceeds your travel period. This encourages the visa officer to grant more days for the visa.
Your travel insurance activates right from the first day of your start date. So, a ten days insurance policy starting on March 4, 2020, will expire on March 14, 2020.
In all cases, you must always get an insurance policy that extends beyond your proposed return date to Ghana. In case you cannot, get a policy that expires on your departure date.
Why Do You Need A Schengen Travel Insurance
The most important thing about Schengen travel insurance is that it qualifies you for Schengen visa. Other benefits of travel insurance are highlighted below:
Free Emergency Medical Treatment
Your Schengen travel insurance gives you the opportunity to receive free standard medical treatment when you fall sick abroad. All costs (or a substantial part of the cost) for medical treatment in the case of an injury sustained in an accident will be covered by your Schengen travel insurance.
Free Emergency Medical Repatriation
Schengen travel insurance policy takes care of the cost of transporting you to the nearest medical centre when you fall sick or become injured. This policy could also help cover the cost of transporting you back to Ghana, while you are recuperating from your illness.
Covers Cost of Trip Interruption
It is common for travelers to suspend their vacation and return home earlier than they have planned. While there are several reasons why they do so, changes in travel plans usually attract additional fees for flight day-change and other necessities. Whenever you find the need to shorten your travel period, your Schengen travel insurance may absorb additional costs that come with emergency trip interruption.
Covers Cost of Returning Mortal Remains
Death is inevitable, meaning it can happen at any time. In an instance where a traveler falls ill and dies, Schengen travel insurance could cover the cost of returning the remains to Nigeria.
On a regular, the cost of returning a corpse back to Ghana is very expensive. A good policy in place could lessen the monetary effects of this on the family members of the deceased.
