MACHINE SHOP PRACTICE

This Programme covers the principles of:

i. Machining
ii. Measurement
iii. Tool Grinding, and
iv. Machine Shop Safety

The course deals with the following:

1. The Properties of Metals
2. How to lay out and set up a job
3. How to use measuring devices such as the micrometer and vernier caliper
4. How to read working drawings
5. How to grind single-and multi-point tools

Machining is a very common and versatile manufacturing process where several operations occur in a planned sequence to achieve the best results. Four of the most common operations are covered, that is: turning, drilling, shaping and milling. Thus, it’s possible to machine various types of material using these methods. Metals, plastics, composites, and wood are all possible work piece materials

Benefits of Programme

1. Students will be introduced to general health, safety and environmental practice at the workshop
2. There will be introduction to use of measuring tools, specifically the steel rule, steel measuring tape and the vernier calipers
3. Candidates will be educated on ferrous, non- ferrous engineering materials and some of their mechanical properties
4. The programme exposes students to the act of sketching and interpreting basic working drawings
5. Students will be equipped to operate the metal cutting lathe and drilling machines and enlightened on the parts and accessories
6. Students will be introduced to gauges and gauging as well as micrometer reading
7. The Programme will engage students in complex lathe and drilling operations
8. Students will be acquainted with the basics shaping and milling operations
9. Programme gives an in-depth study of the classification, constructional features, tool layout for the various machines, i.e. Lathe, Drilling, Shaping and Milling Machines
10. Candidates will be exposed to the basic concepts of milling process and given an idea about the milling cutter nomenclature
11. The concept of indexing will be presented to students to enable them solve simple numerical on indexing
Machines considered under this course are
1. The lathe machine
2. The drilling machine
3. Shaping machine
4. Milling machine

Processes trainees will be exposed to includes:
1. Plain, step, and taper turning
2. Drilling, boring and reaming
3. Screw cutting (internal and external)
4. Grooving and parting
5. Shaping of flat and incline surfaces
6. Slotting (horizontal and vertical)
7. Countersinking, counter-boring and surfacing.
8. Indexing
9. Surface milling
10. Slitting
11. Gear cutting
12. Gang milling

To enable the acquisition of the skills involved, the programme is divided into three levels as follows:

1. Machine Shop Practice I
2. Machine Shop Practice II
3. Machine Shop Practice III

At the end of the three levels candidates will qualify as Metal Machinist.
