The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has introduced four (4) new demand-driven undergraduate programmes in the 2018/19 academic year. The programmes are Marine Engineering, Physician Assistantship, Automobile Engineering and Industrial Engineering. Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso, the Vice-Chancellor revealed this at this year’s Matriculation Ceremony.
Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso administered the Matriculation Oath to the newly admitted students while the Provosts of the Colleges read his speech.
In a speech read on his behalf, Professor Obiri-Danso indicated that as many as 43,667 people applied for admission this year of which 36,818 qualified. However, he noted the University has been able to register 16,888 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The freshmen and women are made up of 10,171 males constituting 60% and 6,717 females constituting 40%.
The Vice-Chancellor was happy, that his initiative for girls in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) has increased KNUST’s average annual female intake to 40% in this year’s admission process.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the matriculation of the new students marks the beginning of another chapter in their lives where they would primarily be responsible for their own life. “No one will tell you what to do; you are, thus, fully responsible to determine the direction of your life. Even though you may find it very liberal, it can be very daunting sometimes” he added.
He assured them of the University’s support to offer them the opportunity to learn so many new things, acquire new knowledge, develop new skills, and enhance their personal attributes. He however cautioned them against going contrary to the rules and regulations of the institution.
Representatives of the KNUST Counselling Centre (KCC), briefed the fresh students on some of the services offered by the Centre and assured them of their preparedness to help them adjust and to make their stay on Campus safe and comfortable for their academic and personal growth.
According representatives from the KCC, the outfit has psychologists, counsellors and administrators to offer professional counselling and support services to students and encouraged them not to take the law into their hands but to report all cases to the Centre for effective management and solutions.
