The management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has released the admission requirements for admission of candidates with WASSCE/SSCE, A’Level, ABCE/GBCE, Mature and Equivalent Qualifications.

GUIDELINES FOR SELECTING AN UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME

  1. Most first degree Programmes of study are of Four (4) Years duration
  1. Minimum/General Entry Requirements

WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

An applicant for admission to a degree Programme in the University must have CREDITS in the THREE WASSCE/SSSCE Core Subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), and CREDITS in THREE WASSCE/SSSCE Elective Subjects or its equivalent relevant to the chosen Programme with aggregate 24 or better (WASSCE: A1- C6/SSSCE A-D) D7, E8 & F9 ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR ADMISSION PURPOSES.

** It is worth noting that the THREE CORE SUBJECTS are prerequisite for all Programmes of study at our University

GENERAL BUSINESS CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (GBCE)

Applicants must have passes in THREE Compulsory Subjects including English Language and passes in THREE Elective Subjects including Business Mathematics.

ADVANCED LEVEL/MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants must have FIVE credits at the GCE O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics (or its approved equivalent), plus passes in at least THREE subjects at the Advanced Level/Three Credits in the case of mature applicants. In addition, the applicant must fulfill the appropriate Faculty or Departmental requirements.

ADVANCED BUSINESS CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (ABCE)

Applicants must have passes in THREE Compulsory Subjects plus THREE (3) Optional Subjects relevant to the Programme of study.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB)

Credit Passes in THREE (3) of the following Elective Subjects: Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics, Biology or General Agriculture.

Applicants with WASSCE/SSSCE Mathematics as one of the Electives must have a strong Biology background.

Diploma Holders with Distinction from KNUST may be eligible to continue up to degree level without a break. Other Diploma holders may be admitted after a minimum of TWO (2) Years Post Diploma field experience.

For (E), Mature Applicants with Certificate in Forestry must have attained the age of 25 years at the time of submitting the Application Forms and a minimum of TWO (2) Years post qualification experience in a related field of Natural Resources Management.

Additionally, Applicants must have Five (5) credits at O’ Level including English Language, Mathematics, and Three (3) of the following: Chemistry and Physics, Biology or Additional General Science or General Science.

OR

Credit passes in THREE (3) Electives including Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Elective Mathematics or General Agriculture. Short-listed applicants must pass an interview.

‘A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level including Mathematics and English Language plus THREE (3)

A’ Level passes in Chemistry, Physics and any one of the following: Biology, Agricultural Science and Mathematics. Applicants with Agricultural Science or Mathematics must have a credit in O’ Level Biology.

3.0. MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants must have attained the age of 25 years at the time of submitting the Application Forms.

EITHER

FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics,

OR

Applicants must have a Diploma from KNUST or from a recognized institution.

OR

Credits in WASSCE/SSSCE Core Subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), plus THREE (3) Electives in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Elective Mathematics or General Agriculture. Short-listed applicants must pass an interview.

BSc. AGRIBUSINESS MANAGEMENT

Science Applicants with the SSSCE/WASSCE certificate ( Science Option), must in addition to credit in the three core subject (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), obtain credits in Chemistry plus either Physics, or Mathematics and Biology or General

Business Applicants with the SSSCE/WASSEC certificate (Business Option), must in addition to credits in the three core subjects (English language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), obtain credits in Economics, Accounting, Business Management, Business Mathematics, Costing or Elective Mathematics. Applicants with this combination must have a minimum of C (for SSSCE applicants) and B3 (for WASSCE Applicants) in Integrated

General Arts Applicants with the SSSCE/WASSCE certificate (General Arts Option) must in addition to credit in the three core subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), obtain credits in Economics, Geography and Elective Mathematics. Applicants with this combination must have a minimum of C (for SSSCE applicants) and B3 (for WASSCE Applicants) in Integrated Science.

BSc. AQUACULTURE AND WATER RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Applicant with the SSSCE/WASSCE certificate (Science Option) must in addition to credit in the three core subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), obtain credits in Chemistry plus either Physics, or Mathematics and Biology or General Agriculture and with aggregate 24 or

II.    Advance Level/Mature Applicants

Applicants must have FIVE (5) credits at the GCE O’ Level including English Language, and Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, plus passes in at least THREE (3) subjects at the Advanced Level. Applicants with Agricultural Science or Mathematics must have a credit in O’ Level Biology.

Mature Applicants must have attained the age of 25 years at the time of submitting the application forms.

III.    Higher National Diploma and Other Diploma Holders

Applicants who have a relevant Diploma with Distinction may be admitted to Year Two (2) of the Programme after successful completion of their National Service. Other categories of relevant Diploma holders may be admitted following Two (2) years Work Experience and subsequent interview or selection examination as may be deemed necessary. HND holders must have met all the requisite passes in English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science at GCE O’ Level, WASSCE or equivalent.

COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

BA. HISTORY

WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

Credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects including History or Government and any of the following: Economics, Geography, French, Ghanaian Language, Literature in English, Religious Studies and any other General Arts Elective and a Pass in Social Studies.

BA. POLITICAL STUDIES

WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

Credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects including Government or History and any of the following: Economics, Geography, French, Ghanaian Language, Literature in English, Religious Studies and any other General Arts Elective and a Pass in Social Studies.

A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

Applicants must have FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level, including English Language and Mathematics, plus THREE (3) A’ Level passes including History and/or Government and any One (1) or Two (2) of the following: Economics, Geography, French, Religious Studies and Ghanaian Language. Applicants must also have a pass in General Paper.

MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants should be a least 25 years at the time of submitting the Application.

A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

Applicants must have FIVE (5) Credits at the O’ Level, including English Language and Mathematics, plus THREE (3) A’ Level Passes including Geography and TWO (2) other Subjects from the following: History, French, English, Akan, Religious Studies, Elective Mathematics and Economics. They must also obtain a pass in General Paper.

MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants should be at least 25 years at the time of submitting the Application Form.

Credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects, including Religious Studies and any TWO (2) General Arts Subjects.

A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

Applicants must have FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level, including, English and Mathematics, plus a minimum of THREE (3) A’ Level passes including Religious Studies and any TWO (2) of the following: History, English Literature, French, Economics, Government and Geography.

MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants should be at least 25 years at the time of submitting the Application. The evidence of age should be supported by the submission of a valid Birth Certificate.

Credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects including Religious Studies and any TWO (2) General Arts Electives.

Diploma Holders

Applicants who possess Diploma or Higher National Diploma in Religious Studies/Theology with a Minimum Grade “B+” from an Accredited University or Theological Seminary will be admitted to second year of the Programme after a successful entrance examination and interview.

BA. ECONOMICS

WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

Credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects including Economics and Elective Mathematics, plus any One (1) of the following: History, Geography, Government, French, Literature in English, Ghanaian Language, Business Management, Costing, and Accounting. Applicants must have a minimum of grade C/B3 in Economics.

A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level, including English and Mathematics, plus a minimum of TWO (2) A’ Level passes, including Economics and any of the following: Geography, French, Literature in English, Business Management, History, Government etc. Applicants must also have a pass in General Paper.

MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants must be at least 25 years at the time of submitting the application.

Full-Time Applicants

Holders of first degree and/or higher degree in any discipline:

Applicants with the above qualification in any discipline may apply. Short-listed applicants shall take an entrance examination and pass an interview.

Applicants in category ii (a) will be required to pursue the Programme for Four (4) years. Mature applicants with Diploma with more than Ten (10) years working experience may apply under this category.

Credit Passes in THREE (3) Core Subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Credit passes in THREE (3) of the following Elective Subjects: Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry.

For J, K, L, and M, Programmes, the same requirements as above except that Applied Electricity OR Electronics is acceptable in place of Chemistry. Also in the case of M, Biology is acceptable in place of Chemistry.

Furthermore, for Programmes E, and F any of the following is acceptable in place of Chemistry; Metal Work, Auto Mechanics, Applied Electricity, Technical Drawing and Engineering Science.

Also, for Programmes P, Q and R any of the following is acceptable in place of Chemistry; Metalwork, Auto Mechanics, Applied Electricity, Technical Drawing, Building Construction and Woodwork.

For Programme A, any of the following are acceptable in place of Chemistry; Technical Drawing and Engineering Science, General Agriculture and Biology.

Applicants in this category who do not have Chemistry must obtain Grade B3 in Integrated Science.

A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level including English and Mathematics, plus,

Passes at A’ Level in: Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Physics with an ‘O’ Level credit in Chemistry.

Candidates with the Ordinary National Diploma (OND) or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Estate Management or other relevant Diploma qualification from a recognized University or Polytechnic with Cumulative Weighted Average (CWA) of 70% and above after a successful interview would be admitted into the second year of the Programme. Other Diploma holders  with less than 70% as their CWA would be required to have three years work experience in the real estate industry and in addition pass an interview to be admitted into first year of the Programme.

BSc. MIDWIFERY (REGULAR)

WASSCE APPLICANTS

Credits Passes in three core subjects at WASSCE/SSSCE level namely: Mathematics, English Language, and Integrated Science, and Credits in any THREE (3) Elective Science Subjects; Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Elective Mathematics.

A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS 

FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level, including Mathematics, English Language and a Science subject, plus THREE (3) A’ Level passes in the Sciences (Chemistry and Biology, Physics or Mathematics).

BSc. MIDWIFERY (MATURE APPLICANTS FOR TOP-UP)

Applicants must satisfy the University’s General Requirements for Admission into Degree Programmes. In addition they must:

  • Be registered Midwives with a Diploma in Midwifery
  • Be at least 25 years of age at the time of submitting the application
  • Have a minimum of TWO (2) years working experience in a clinical area Applicants in this category must pass an

BSc. MIDWIFERY (SANDWICH)

Applicants must satisfy the University’s General Requirements for Admission into Degree Programmes. In addition they must:

  • Be registered Midwives with a Diploma in Midwifery
  • Be at least 25 years of age at the time of submitting the application
  • Have a minimum of TWO (2) years working experience in a clinical area

Applicants in this category must pass an Interview. This Programme is taken during the Holidays.

BSc. NURSING (EMERGENCY OPTION)

Applicants must satisfy the University’s General Requirements for the Admission to Degree Programmes. In addition, they must:

  • Be matured registered general Nurses with a Diploma in Nursing
  • Be 25 years of age at the time of submitting the
  • Have a minimum of TWO (2) years working Experience in a clinical

Applicants in this category must pass an interview

BSc. PHYSIOTHERAPY AND SPORTS SCIENCE

WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

Credit passes in THREE (3) core subjects including English Language, Integrated Science, Mathematics and Credit passes in any THREE (3) elective subjects in Biology, Chemistry and either Mathematics or Physics.

A’ LEVEL HOLDERS

Credit passes in FIVE (5) subjects at GCE Ordinary Level including English Language and Mathematics and Three (3) Credit passes at Advanced Level in Biology, Chemistry and either Mathematics or Physics.

FOREIGN APPLICANTS

Who have any of the above qualifications or their equivalent from an accredited/recognized institutions.

MATURE APPLICANTS

Mature students who have attained the age of 25 years or above at the time of application.

And

Applicants must have obtained credit passes (A1-C6/ A-D) in the following Three (3) Core Subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science plus credit passes (A1-C6/A-D) in three (3) elective subjects in Biology, Chemistry and either Mathematics or Physics at WASSCE/SSSCE. In addition, they must have worked for at least three (3) years. These applicants will be considered for admission into year one.

Or

Candidates who have relevant Diploma certificates in Sports and Exercise Science, Fitness Assessment, Physiotherapy and Orthotic Assistant, Coaching etc and who must have worked for at least three (3) years will be considered for admission into year two.

In addition to all of the above, candidates must be declared medically fit by the University Hospital and must undergo a physical fitness assessment and must pass a(n) written and/or oral interview conducted at the Department.

DOCTOR OF PHARMACY (PHARM D) 6-YEARS

WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

Credits passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects: Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics.

A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

FIVE (5) credits at the O’ Level, including English Language and Mathematics, plus THREE (3) passes at the A’ Level in Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics. Applicants must also have a pass in General Paper.

MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants must be at least 25 years at the time of submitting the application.

EITHER

FIVE (5) credits at the O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics

OR

WASSCE/SSSCE credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects (Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics).

DOCTOR OF PHARMACY (PHARM D) TOP-UP (FEE-PAYING)

A Degree in Pharmacy with at least THREE (3) years post-registration experience. An interview will be required.

Duration of the Programme: Two (2) years.

Mode of Delivery: Modular and sandwich. The taught courses will be delivered on-site with face-to-face interaction between Lecturer and Students on a schedule of an average of one week per month, coupled with E-Learning. The practical sections will take place at selected study  sites.

BHM. HERBAL MEDICINE

WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

Credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects: Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics.

A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

FIVE (5) Credits at O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics plus THREE (3) A’ Level passes in Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics.

MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants must be at least 25 years at the time of submitting the application.

EITHER

FIVE (5) credits at the O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics

OR

WASSCE/SSSCE Credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects (Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics).

BSc. DISABILITY AND REHABILITATION STUDIES WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

Credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects from the following groups: General Science, General Art, Business, Visual Art or Vocational.

BSc. MEDICAL IMAGING

WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

Credits in the THREE Core Subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science) plus credits in THREE Elective Subjects: Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics.

 ‘A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

Credits in at least FIVE ‘O’ Level Subjects including English Language and Mathematics or equivalent, plus THREE passes at the ‘A’ Level in Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics.

MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants should be at least 25 years at the time of submitting the application, and possess:

EITHER

FIVE credits at the ‘O’ Level, including English Language and Mathematics

OR

WASSCE/SSSCE credits in THREE Core Subjects (English Language, mathematics and Integrated Science) plus credits in THREE relevant Elective Subjects: Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics

BSc PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTSHIP

SSSCE/WASSCE APPLICANTS

CREDITS in the THREE (3) Core Subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), and CREDIT passes in THREE (3) Elective subjects: Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics.

‘A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

Five (5) GCE ‘O’ Level credits including English Language and Mathematics plus Three (3) ‘A’ Level passes in Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics. Applicants must also have a pass in General Paper.

MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants must be at least 25 years at the time of submitting the application.

EITHER

FIVE (5) Credits at GCE ‘O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics.

OR

WASSCE/SSSCE Credit passes in THREE (3) Core Subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science) plus THREE (3) Elective subjects (Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics).

GRADUATES

Bachelor degree holders in the Life Sciences (Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Medical Laboratory Technology, Herbal Medicine and Sports and Exercise Science,) will be placed in year two (2) of the programme whilst applicants with BSc. Nursing will be placed in year three

(3) of the programme after a successful interview. Successful applicants will be exempted from some courses already studied.

OTHER APPLICANTS

Mature applicants (aged 25 years and above) who are holders of diploma in Physiotherapy, Dental Assistantship, Medical Assistants, Laboratory Technician programme, Pharmacy Technician programme and the Registered General Nursing Diploma with at least Three (3) years post qualification experience and a good pass at the diploma level may be admitted to the first year of the programme after a successful interview. Such candidates may also be required to satisfy the University’s general requirements for admission to degree programmes
