What is Bolt?

Bolt (formerly Taxify) is an Estonian ride-hailing company that was started in August 2013 by Markus Villig. It is a transportation app used for requesting a fast and affordable ride.

Bolt is known to be operating in about 30 countries of the world including Ghana. The company made a huge sum of €79.7 million in 2018, from their riding services. Certainly, the company has come to stand and stand firm.

How Does Bolt Work in Ghana?

Bolt works with an App. You can download the Bolt App on Google PlayStore or Apple Store. Register, call for a driver. Get picked up and taken to your destination. Pay for the trip. Simple.

Bolt Ghana works with registered drivers who have their own car. These drivers are connected to passengers by the company. The company now gets some percentage of the trip fare, after a successful trip has been delivered.

A user simply needs to follow the processes described earlier, in order to enjoy the Bolt services.

Requirements to Become a Bolt Driver in Ghana

To register as a driver on the Bolt Ghana platform, you must meet the following driving requirements:

  • Are at least 25 years old
  • Own a valid Ghana driver’s license
  • Own a vehicle that meets the accepted criteria
  • Have an Android or iPhone Smartphone with GPS
  • Clean criminal record

Bolt Vehicle Requirements in Ghana

In order for your car to be eligible on bolt platform, it must meet the following requirements:

  • Be manufactured in 2005 or later
  • Have air conditioning
  • Be a private vehicle (government, taxi or rebuilt vehicles are not eligible)
  • Have a valid Third Party/Comprehensive Insurance
  • Have a valid Roadworthiness Certificate
  • Complete vehicle registration.

Note: Vehicles that do not meet the requirements will not be accepted.

Needed Documents for Bolt Registration in Ghana

When signing up to drive with Bolt in Ghana, you would need to provide the following documents:

  • Valid Ghanaian driver’s license (if it is a temporary license which has been extended, make sure to provide proof)
  • Third-Party or Comprehensive insurance policy or sticker
  • Roadworthiness Certificate sticker
  • Clear and front-facing profile picture (please do not wear sunglasses when taking the picture).

Note: It is not required but is highly recommended to provide a Clearance Certificate too.

How to Register as Bolt Driver in Ghana

Register through the sign-up portal and follow the application process:

  • Step 1: Enter your email address, phone number and city (Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi and Cape Coast)
  • Step 2: Fill in your personal details
  • Step 3: Fill in your National ID (Driver’s License Number) and License Number (Reference number of the License)
  • Step 4: Upload all the required documents and their expiry dates
  • Step 5: Fill in your payment details i.e. mobile money wallet where you want to receive payments:
    • Select Person as your Billing Type
    • Your name as the Mobile Money Wallet Name
    • Your MoMo number starting with 233 as your Mobile Wallet Number
    • Your network provider is Mobile Money Network.

Wait until bolt process and approve your application. If the application is missing any documents/details, bolt team will contact you.

If you initially signed up to drive in the wrong city, you’ll need to contact Bolt to make the necessary corrections.

How to Activate your Bolt Account

After you have completed the training session, Bolt will create a  profile for you. Use the login credentials provided to log into your account. You have a period of 48 hours thereafter to complete your first trip to activate your profile.

How Much Does a Bolt Driver Earn in Ghana?

All bolt drivers get paid once a week. The payment cycle runs from Monday 00:00 to the following Sunday at 23:59.

You will receive your pay + bonuses as one payout during the first half of the week. Normally it should take between 1–2 business days to reflect in your account. Additionally, you’ll receive your bonuses together with payouts.

It is advised to use mobile money account for faster processing of payouts.

Average Monthly Earnings of Bolt Drivers in Ghana

The amount earned by Bolt drivers varies considerably. Full-time drivers who work every day earns more than part-time drivers.

On average, a bolt drive earns GHC 4000 per month in Ghana. From the final price per order, Bolt charges 15% commission.

Best Times for Driving in Ghana

As a driver, you need to understand the best times to drive in order to increase your earnings. We have busy hours and not-so-busy hours, so you need to know which is which.

The best times to drive in Ghana is during the morning and evening peak hours. You can take some hours off during low-demand hours to have a rest. The more people that need a ride, the more opportunities to earn as a driver.

You too can increase your earnings by driving during busier times, such as 6AM-10AM and 4PM-8PM on weekdays and especially all day and night from Friday to Sunday.
