AngloGold Ashanti is a global gold mining company with mines and exploration projects in four different regions namely – Continental Africa, Americas, Australasia and South Africa. The underground mining operation will be fully mechanized, designed to produce up to an average maximum of 5,000 t/day of ore mined.

Role/Purpose

To provide dependable systems of work that reliably delivers the expected ore grade and tonnage from mine to mill. Integrate the technical studies, programs and analysis of production geology with the business objectives and processes of mine planning, mining production, and process plant. Monitor and report on these processes through effective reconciliation of gold movement across the system.

Responsibilities

  • Establish the necessary foundation for the redevelopment of the Obuasi Mine and being operationally ready

o Core Management Operational Readiness System and process design
o Contract and Contractor Supervision (Drilling, Laboratory & BOS, Datamine, Leapfrog)
o Fit for purpose facilities operations

  • Implement the current Obuasi Mine redevelopment geology plan and improve upon it where possible

o Apply defined Core Management risk management practices
o Apply established Core Management Functional systems and methods
o Functional areas: Core Yard Management

  • Prepare Geology LOM plans and annual budget, rolling annual forecast consistent with the approved project

o Implement Yearly Core Management plans consistent with the approved project
o Implement monthly budget plan and budget
o Implement rolling monthly forecast for geology

  • Manage the delivery of the Geology Department budget as minimum requirement through the performance of Chief Geologist Team

o Implement defined Core Management risk management practices
o Implement established Core Management Functional systems and methods
o Provide Core Management budget performance reporting

  • Demonstrate Safety Leadership and improve the Culture across the Geology Department regarding Safety, Health, and Sustainable Development

o Ensure Core Management:
o Goals and targets achievement
o Monitoring and reporting actions
o Major incident investigation contribution
o Monitor and assist hazard reporting

  • Environmental management that is integrated into the Geology Department business plan and for drilling, core yard and laboratory

o Compliance to corporate, legislative, regulatory protocols and document control

  • Resource and develop the people within the Geology Department to capably and consistently deliver the annual budget, LoM plan and strategy according to their role and level of authority

o Adhere to “Fit for purpose” Evaluation, Production, Exploration & Core Management structure and role descriptions
o Implement Competency Matrix across section Roles
o Adhere Leadership and Supervisory Development Program & Plan

  • Nurture and sustain a site of accountability and continuous improvement within Geology Department

o Provide evidence of improved productivity across the Core Management sections
o Ensure continuous improvement to address:
o Cost effectiveness
o Productivity improvement

  • Support the MD in maintaining constructive relationships with internal Stakeholders (Exco, Corporate, Group Planning & Technical, CAR, etc.) and external Stakeholders (Contractors, Ghana Chamber of Mines, Mineral Commission, Stool Lands Administrator)

o Supervisory involvement and contribution
o Cross sectional & functional collaboration
o A subject matter specialist to leverage technical excellence throughout the Department

Requirements/Experience

  •  Bachelor’s Degree in Geosciences/Geology/Geological Engineering
  • Minimum of 3 years’ underground working experience
  • In-depth knowledge in core/chip logging and interpretation of logged data
  • Must have basic working knowledge in Datamine and Century System software to represent logged data
  • In-depth knowledge in underground geological mapping, plotting and interpretation of data
  • Detailed budgeting/contractor experience
  • Must be effective communicator and have good presentational skills
