Role

Manage the origination of commercial banking credit proposals on behalf of Commercial Relationship Managers and New Business Managers. This includes supporting in account and portfolio management as required.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities

  • Identify credit and risk management requirements at the source of the deal negotiation/ business proposal.
  • Conduct credit evaluation interviews during deal negotiation to obtain sufficient and appropriate information to evaluate business risk and deal viability, from a credit risk perspective
  • Work in partnership with Commercial Relationship Managers / New Business Managers and client to identify alternatives that could bring non viable deal/ proposals within acceptable risk parameters relative to profitability.
  • Recommend appropriate facilities in line with risk evaluation.
  • Present and defend own judgment & senior credit evaluations to clients in a manner which does not negatively affect the business relationship.
  • Gain a thorough understanding of the economic, business, regulatory and legal environments in respect of the countries in his/her portfolio.

  • Identify, quantify and evaluate sources of risk in relation to the profitability of business proposal and financial viability of corporation as a whole, interrogates information obtained to gain a thorough understanding of business parameters which create profit/value as well as the associated risks.
  • Utilize Industry risk analysis available to identify and understand contextual threats to existing and potential clients.
  • Evaluate whether proposals meet sound business criteria and counter-party credit risk falls within acceptable parameters and recommends appropriate business credit facilities including terms or conditions of facilities.
  • Prepare credit applications providing sound financial and business justification for deals/proposals within acceptable risk parameters relative to the profitability.
  • Build relationship with Commercial Account Executives to improve quality of business proposals and turnaround time on credit evaluations.
  • Share joint credit responsibility for business papers written.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, banking and finance or economics from a recognized University.
  • A solid background in credit, with specialist credit skills (minimum 5 years experience) and the proven ability to lead a high performing team as well as provide specialist input on project finance, structured and trade finance transactions.

Knowledge/Technical Skills/Expertise

  • Detailed understanding of accounting, including both management and financial accounting (or a specialist in a determining value in a particular industry), in order to analyze the financial strengths and weaknesses of clients, and identify potential risks to credit proposals.
  • Thorough understanding of all the bank’s products and facilities that give rise to counter-party credit risk, including their mechanisms and source of profitability for the client and the bank, and what constitutes credit risks in these facilities. Understands the terms of the facilities, and any conditions and covenants that will need to be complied with over the duration of the facilities life, in order to manage risk within set parameters.
  • Knowledge of financial markets and the volatile nature of certain variable security held, as well as the market forces that influence their market value.
  • Using available information sources and technology to effectively tap information crucial to sound and informed decision making and management of credit related deals.
  • Thorough conceptual and practical knowledge of credit procedures, policies, and standards, as they apply to each situation such as credit applications, bad debts, disputes, obtaining legal assistance and reporting.
  • The ability to take a balanced approach towards risk/reward with effective risk mitigation as opposed to a risk minimization approach.
  • An understanding/ability to understand the broader business environment in which the bank operates from an Industry, organization, functional and role perspective, and to relate that to the PBB Credit function.
  • Adequate knowledge of risk best practises (measurement and management systems, processes and policies).
  • The ability and confidence to operate and make decisions independently whilst still operating as an effective team player.
  • Effectively applies verbal, nonverbal and written communication methods to achieve desired results, taking particular account of cultural diversities and language barriers.
