School Reopening Date for KG, JHS, SHS & Tertiary Institutions

The re-opening date for KG, JHS and SHS 2 and 3 students has been released for the commencement of academic activities for the 2020/2021 academic year has been announced.

Students in private and public kindergarten, primary and Junior High Schools (JHS) will from January 15, 2021 return back to school, the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said.

His Excellency announced this in his 21st televised nation’s address on Sunday, January 3, 2021, giving updates on measures taken by the central government to slow and curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The government’s decision to reopen schools mid-January this year comes after Nana Akufo-Addo held a meeting with the Cabinet on what it takes for students to return back to school in the face of the global pandemic.

Akufo-Addo as part of an effort to ensure a safe school reopening noted the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service will ensure that all institutions, public and private, are fumigated and disinfected.

“Schools and institutions, with their own hospitals and clinics, will be equipped with the necessary personal protective equipment, and have isolation centres to deal with any positive cases”, he added.

He furthered that “All other school and institutions, without their own clinics and hospitals, have been mapped to health facilities. There will be, for now, no mass gatherings and no sporting activities.”

According to him, face masks, ‘Veronica’ buckets, hand sanitisers, liquid soap, rolls of tissue paper, and thermometer guns will be provided to the various school before the school reopening date January 15, 2021.

Summary of School Resumption 2020/2021

  • School reopens on the 15th of January from KG to JHS
  • SHS 2 & 3 will report on 18th January 2021
  • SHS 1 will report to school on 18th March, 2021
  • Tertiary will reopen on 9th January, 2021

From 15th January, our children in kindergarten, primary and Junior High, in both private and public schools will be back in school.

All SHS 1 students will start classes from 18th March, with all students embarking on single-track academic calendar. Academic work will commence fully on Monday 22nd March 2021.

SHS 2 and SHS 3 will, however, return to school from 18th January.

I must stress that SHS 3 students in all schools, like SHS 1 students will no longer run the double-track system. The expansion of infrastructure at the various senior high schools over the last three (3) years, has brought us to this favourable situation.

However, the double-track system will still be applicable to SHS 2 students in schools that are employing it.

Students in universities and other tertiary institutions are to be in school from Saturday, 9th January.
