NSESA Foundation STEM WOW Essay Competition 2018 for Female African Students
Applications are open for the NSESA Foundation STEM WOW Essay Competition 2018. The STEM WOW Essay Competition by NSESA Foundation seeks to encourage girls and young women to reflect on the Foundation’s powerful STEM WOW stories and how these stories have impacted them.
STEM WOW is a project by Nsesa Foundation to tell the stories of inspirational young African women on the continent and in the diaspora who are rocking it in the field of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Since February 2018, they have shared the inspirational stories of such women across the world on their website and social media pages with the goal of inspiring the next generation of female African Innovators, Scientists, Engineers and STEM educators with these powerful stories.

Prizes
Applicants with the top reflection essays will receive one or more of the following awards:
- The Project iSWEST Prize – A full scholarship to attend Project iSWEST 2018 from July 9-28, 2018.
- The SuaCode Prize – A full scholarship to participate in the next cohort of SuaCode in August 2018.
- The STEM WOW Prize – A real-time virtual mentoring session with one of NSESA Foundation’s STEM WOW’s where you get the opportunity learn from them, ask questions and receive expert advice on a wide variety of subjects.
Note: You would have to apply for Project iSWEST 2018 or SuaCode separately if you are interested in The Project iSWEST Award or The SuaCode Award respectively. However, if you are not interested in applying Project iSWEST 2018 or SuaCode, you will still be eligible for the STEM WOW Prize
Eligibility
- Applicants must be a female African student currently enrolled in high school, graduated from high school or in any university.
Application
To participate in the competition, you will read the stories and reflect on how their stories have impacted you, one way or the other and write a 300 to 500-word essay to share your reflections with us. Make sure to include specific examples of how you have been impacted in your reflection. You may also include initiatives or projects you have started or want to start due to inspiration from the STEM WOW stories.
