Ghana is divided into 16 regions which in turn are divided into several districts. In total, Ghana has a landmass of 92,098 sq miles (238,533 sq km). However, some regions are bigger than others.
The largest region by land size in Ghana is the Savannah region while the smallest region is the Greater Accra Region. The Greater Accra might be the smallest by land size, but it is the largest by population.

Largest Regions in Ghana by Land Mass
Six new regions were created in Ghana, increasing the total number of regions to sixteen. Before now, the largest region used to be the Northern region with 70,384 sq km. However, with the split of these regions, the Savannah region now become the largest region in Ghana by landmass.
1. Savannah Region
The Savannah Region is one of the newest regions in Ghana and yet the largest region in the country with a land size of 35,862 sq km. The region was created out of the Northern Region. It is located in the northern part of the country. The Savannah Region is divided into 7 districts and 7 Constituencies. The district capital of the Savannah region is Damongo.
The Savannah region has a low population density. Its official language is English, however, most inhabitants speak a language of the Oti–Volta subfamily in the Niger–Congo language family, such as Gonja, Dagbani, Mamprusi, or Tamprusi. A majority of residents in the Savanna Region identify as Muslim.
2. Northern Region
The Northern Region is the second largest region in Ghana with a landmass of 70,765 sq km. As the name implies, it is located in the north of the country. It was the largest region in Ghana until when the Savannah and North East Regions were created from it.
The Northern region is divided into 14 districts with its regional capital being Tamale. The official language spoken in the Northern region is English. However, most inhabitants speak the language of the Oti–Volta subfamily in the Niger–Congo language family, such as Dagbani, Mamprusi or Konkomba.
3. Ashanti Region
The Ashanti Region is the third-largest region in Ghana with a total land size of 24,389 sq km. In terms of population, it is one of the most populated regions in Ghana. The capital of the Ashanti region is Kumasi.
4. Bono East
The newly created Bono East ranks fourth on the list of the largest region of Ghana with a land size of 22,220 sq km. The Bono East region was carved out of the existing Brong Ahafo region of Ghana. It has 11 districts with Techiman as its capital.
5. Eastern Region
The Eastern region is the fifth largest region in Ghana with a total land size of 19,323 sq km. The Eastern region has 2 districts with Koforidua as its capital. The main spoken languages in the Eastern region are Akan, Ewe, Krobo, and English.
6. Upper West
The sixth-largest region in Ghana is Upper West with a landmass of 18,476 sq km. It is located in the north-western corner of Ghana and is bordered by Upper East region to the east, the Northern region to the south, and Burkina Faso to the west and north. The Upper West region has 11 districts with Wa as its capital.
7. Western Region
The Western region is among the largest region by landmass in Ghana. The Western North region was carved out of the Western region. It spreads from the Ivory Coast border in the west to the Central region in the east, including the capital and large twin city of Sekondi-Takoradi.
8. Brong Ahafo Region
Before the Bono East and Ahafo region were carved out, Brong Ahafo region used to be the second-largest region by landmass. The region occupies a land size of about 12, 327 sq km. The region has a total of 21 districts with Sunyani as its capital.
9. Volta Region
The Volta Region is one of the sixteen regions of Ghana. The newly created Oti region was carved out of the Volta region. It has a 25 administrative districts with Ho as its capital. The region is located in the West of the Republic of Togo.
10. Central Region
The Central region is the 10th largest region in Ghana with a total land area of 9,826 sq km. It has 17 administrative districts with Cape Coast as its capital.
The Central region shares a boundary with Ashanti, the Western region, the Greater Accra region and the Gulf of Guinea.
