IAEA Young Innovative Communicators Competition 2018 is now open. Applications are invited by the International Atomic Energy Agency for its Young Innovative Communicators Competition 2018.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is soliciting ideas from students and early career professionals on how to communicate on nuclear and radiological emergencies. The competition to collect innovative ideas is open for submissions until 15 June.

The following questions are at the core of the IAEA Young Innovative Communicators Competition:
- How can communication support nuclear or radiological emergency response in a way that is innovative and efficient?
- How should communication be shaped to prevent panic, minimize rumours, and maintain public trust?
IAEA Young Innovative Communicators Competition Benefits.
Five finalists will be invited to Vienna, Austria to present their innovative concepts at the International Symposium from 1 to 5 October 2018. The IAEA will cover travel and daily subsistence allowance. The five finalists will also make an exclusive visit to the IAEA Incident and Emergency Centre and the IAEA Press Office and meet with experts on nuclear emergency communication.
IAEA Young Innovative Communicators Competition Eligibility.
Students and young professionals aged 18-25 in areas such as crisis communication, communication strategy development, emergency response, social media management, outreach, public and internal communication and more are welcome to submit innovative ideas that address challenges in nuclear and radiological emergency communication.
IAEA Young Innovative Communicators Competition Timelines.
- 26 March 2018: Official submission form will be posted on the IEC website.
- 15 June 2018: Submission deadline (EXTENDED).
- 29 June 2018: Top five winners will be chosen.
- 10 July 2018: Announcement of winners.
- 1-5 October 2018: Finalists will present their projects at the CNREP Symposium.
How to Enter IAEA Young Innovative Communicators Competition.
If the answer is YES, read the formal guidelines and send us your idea in the official submission form.
Each submission should include the following:
- A description of the concept (maximum 1000 words), provided as a PDF file (official submission form available on the symposium webpage at https://www.iaea.org/events/ communicating-nuclear-and-radiological-emergencies-symposium-2018), including:
- Summary – A summary of no more than 100 words of the concept, including the main problem being addressed.
- Explanation – An explanation to detail the concept, for example, the background, what tools will be used, and why it is relevant for communicating in nuclear or radiological emergencies.
- Implementation – How would the concept work in practice? Who would be required to support it? What is the target market?
- A profile – Information about the participant, full name, nationality, date of birth, affiliation (educational institution or company/organization)
The overall themes that are expected to be discussed at the international symposium are as follows: Emergency Preparedness and Response; Stakeholder Engagement; Public Communication Channels and Tools in Emergencies; Social Media; Effective Communication; Psychology of Communication; Coordination of Information; Communicating in Different Types of Emergencies; “Am I safe?” and Lessons Learned from Past Emergencies.
