Forty Tertiary Institutions to be Closed down by NAB
The Ministry of Education is in the process of closing down all tertiary institutions operating without accreditation from the National Accreditation Board in the Country.
The move according to the Minister in charge of Tertiary Education, Professor Kwesi Yankah, signals the importance Government attaches to quality and standards in tertiary education.
He said, the accreditation board is currently undertaking an admission auditing process and universities found to be admitting unqualified candidates will be severely sanctioned.
The Minister disclosed this when he addressed the 15th Graduation and 24th Matriculation of the Catholic University College of Ghana (CUCG) at Fiapre near Sunyani in the Brong-Ahafo Region.
The Catholic University College of Ghana was established in March 2002 and obtained accreditation from the National Accreditation Board in December of the same year.
It is affiliated to the University of Ghana and the University of Cape Coast.
The 15th Graduation and 24th Matriculation Ceremony of the CUCG was well attended by the Clergy from the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani, Vice Chancellors from Universities across the Country, Traditional Rulers and past and present Ministers of Education.
Giving his address, the Vice Chancellor of CUCG, Prof. Daniel Obeng-Ofori said, the governing council has granted the school approval to establish an Entrepreneurship Innovation Center that will create avenues for support and promotion of entrepreneurship and innovation among students of CUCG and others.
This he said is to contribute to Ghana’s job creation efforts.
The Vice Chancellor Of the CUCG also said the school has gone far with its plan to establish a Law School after obtaining a presidential charter in January 2019.
Prof. Obeng-Ofori however, disclosed that the CUCG is in a weak financial situation, requiring urgent action.
He consequently appealed to the Catholic Church, benevolent organizations and other individuals to go to their aid in sustaining their operations for the next couple of years.
The Minister of State, in charge of Tertiary Education, Prof. Kwesi Yankah, delivered the keynote address at the ceremony.
He said Private and Public universities are about the same.
He said the main difference, which makes Private universities a little more expensive is partly due to tax as well as the expensive accreditation processes, which are passed on to students.
He said currently government has started a review of accreditation processes and policies directing the setting up of universities in the country.
Prof. Yankah revealed that more than forty tertiary institutions operating illegally without accreditation are to be closed down as part of a clamp down by the Ghana Education Service
Prof. Kwesi Yankah continued that government is anxious to simplify the bureaucracy of accreditation and affiliation in line with the importance of quality and standards in tertiary education.
He encouraged the graduants to be good ambassadors of CUCG.
In all 820 graduated while 332 students were matriculated.
