As a Ghanaian international student looking to study in Switzerland, you’ll need to apply for a Switzerland student visa from the Swiss embassy in Accra before traveling to Switzerland.

Duration of Switzerland Student Visa

The student visa duration depends on the program and the duration of the course you choose. Before applying for a Swiss study permit, you must know the duration of the course and the type of visa that you need.

Basically, there are two types of study permit or visa for students who wish to study in Switzerland.

  • C visa – The C visa is offered to students who wish to undertake short courses (summer schools, language schools) that last only for up to three months
  • D visa – This D visa is offered to students who wish to undertake courses that last longer than three months.

Note: if you apply for a type D visa and plan to stay in Switzerland longer than three months, you will need to arrange to get your residence permit from the cantonal migration offices within 14 days of arrival.

Alternatively, International students can take up part-time work for up to 15 hours a week during the semester and can work full-time during holidays. This condition applies only after you must have been living in Switzerland for at least six months and as long as it doesn’s affect the progress of your studies.

The hiring company or employer will get you a Switzerland work permit. After graduation, foreign students can stay in Switzerland for six months to look for work under the same conditions as Swiss graduates.

Required Documents for Switzerland Student Visa Application

Here is a list of required documents you will need if you are applying for a Switzerland study permit from Ghana.

  • Valid passport (still valid for 6 months after the date of application)
    • Foreigners living in Ghana need to submit a copy of a valid residence permit
    • 3 visa application forms “Application for a long stay visa” duly filled in, dated and
    signed
    • 2 photocopies of passport and of all pages with valid visas
    • 3 recent passport photos with white background (not older than 6 months)
    • Original and 1 photocopy of the letter of acceptance by the chosen school
    • Proof of sufficient funds (1 original + 1 photocopy) for the duration of the course or
    for one year if it concerns a long duration course.
  • 2 photocopies of school certificates/diplomas
    • 2 detailed plans of study in Switzerland
    • CV (curriculum vitae), 2 copies duly signed by the student
    • 2 letters of intention (or statement of purpose) in which you identify your plans for
    the future (e.g. professional developments intended by the student after having finished the studies in Switzerland, explanation as to how the student considers his future is going to benefit from these studies, etc). The written letters must be signed by the student.
    • Visa fee and postal fee for Switzerland (63 Euros payable in GHC or CFA only)
    • Written declaration to leave Switzerland at the end of studies.

How to Apply for Switzerland Student Visa From Ghana

  1. Apply for admission into a Swiss University. Proceed to the next step when you have been granted admission.
  2. Visit the visa application center in Ghana to obtain your visa application form or Download Here. Fill same and submit at the embassy.
  3. Pay your visa application fee and services fee at the Swiss Embassy in Accra.
  4. Schedule a visa appointment (place your appointment at least 4 months before your intended travel date).

Switzerland Student Visa Processing Time

All applicants must submit their visa application as early as 10 weeks – 4 months before the travel date (approximate timeline).

    1. Since you’ve got your Switzerland visa, you can move there from Lithuania. You don’t need to get to Ghana first before going back to Switzerland.
